For more than thirty years, the goal of Washington Wild (formed in 1979 as Washington Wilderness Coalition) has been to protect and restore wild lands and waters in Washington State through citizen empowerment, support for grassroots community groups, advocacy, and public education.

We are a non-profit organization that brings people together in the vigorous defense of our remaining wild forests, waters, and wildlife. We believe that public lands are a public issue.

At the beginning of the internship, the Conservation Department will train and mentor the intern about all the campaigns and issues we work on, so no prior knowledge is needed (although it's always helpful) - just a keen interest in learning about our issues and an appreciation for wild places!

  • Writing press releases on breaking news and relevant issues
  • Assist in the creation of (and solicit, as needed) op-eds and letters to the editors
  • Helping to update and maintain WW's web site with program information, relevant news, event announcements, volunteer opportunities, etc.
  • Potentially attending public events to share the mission and work of WW
  • Using social media (such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr) to help us engage the public around events and campaigns
  • Conducting media tracking and research to determine efficacy of current and proposed communications methods
  • Participating in other relevant special projects and events as needed
  • Research conservation issues as needed by the conservation team

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate:?

  • Has an interest in learning about and protecting Washington's wild lands and waters
  • Has excellent written and spoken communications skills
  • Has basic computer skills, such as word processing and Excel
  • Has graphic design skills, including InDesign, PhotoShop, Publisher, basic HTML, and Joomla
  • Has experience in marketing, advertising, or other communications-related field
  • Has social media outreach skills, such as Facebook, Twitter, and blogging
  • Is flexible and has a sense of humor
  • Is responsible and trustworthy
  • Is outgoing, comfortable talking with different groups of people and able to share their interest and enthusiasm with others
  • Works well in a team setting and independently
  • Can represent Washington Wild in a professional and respectable manor
  • Is willing to take on a number of different tasks to help our organization fulfill our mission

Compensation: Washington Wild wants to make this a meaningful experience for both our intern and our organization.? We are flexible and willing to work to make sure this is a mutually positive experience for both parties and one that is enjoyable for everyone! This is an unpaid internship, which offers invaluable work experience with an established environmental non-profit.

Start and end dates are flexible; ideally the intern would begin in early to mid January. Expected hours will be around 20 per week. Please indicate your availability in your cover letter.
