Franklin County had the reputation as "The Wettest County in the World" (the name of Matt Bondurant?s best-selling book on which the film is based), because so many moonshine stills were running that the hills "lit up like Christmas lights," in the words of one of Bondurant?s ancestors, Jack (Shia LeBeouf).

Tom Hardy) is the oldest and strongest, while middle brother Howard (Jason Clarke) is the wild one. The Bondurants run their alcohol to their buyers with little trouble, except for a small bribe to the local sheriff (Bill Camp).

But things are changing. The new attorney general, Mason Wardell (Tim Tolin), wants some of the graft for himself, and sends in a special agent ? the well-groomed Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce) ? as his enforcer. When Forrest decides not to pay off Wardell, Rakes comes in to wreak havoc on the Bondurants? empire, taking particular delight in pounding on little Jack.

Jack decides to fight back, both against Rakes? fury and Forrest?s belief that he?s too young to take charge. He mounts his own moonshining deal with a top Chicago gangster, Floyd Banner (Gary Oldman). He also tries to make time with Bertha (Mia Wasikowska), the sheltered daughter of a nearby preacher. Meanwhile, Forrest gives shelter to Maggie (Jessica Chastain), who recently escaped from a hard life in Chicago, with interesting consequences.

Hillcoat (who directed "The Road") captures the rough-and-tumble of the Bondurants? bootlegging existence, the violence that erupts at the intersection of money and vice, and the thrill of Jack?s rise as a hotshot junior mobster. Screenwriter Nick Cave (who wrote the script for Hillcoat?s first movie, "The Proposition") deftly balances between Forrest?s story and Jack?s ? and draws out the compelling characters in this blood-soaked slice of American history. (Cave, better known as a rock musician, also collaborated with Warren Ellis on the moody score.)

The casting isn?t always perfect (it?s hard to picture Hardy and LaBeouf in the same gene pool), but some performances stand out. Best of the lot are Chastain as the world-weary and wounded Maggie, and Pearce?s gloriously scenery-chewing turn as the fastidious but ultra-violent bagman. Their energy in "Lawless" proves that history doesn?t have to be a dry subject.

PULLMAN -- Washington State University's head coach for cross country and distance coach for the track and field program, Pete Julian, resigned Monday to take a position with the Nike Oregon Project in Portland, Ore.

Julian, 41, joined the WSU staff in 2009 after a highly successful career as a collegiate coach and professional athlete and coach. Julian was promoted to the head coach for WSU cross country in the fall of 2010.

"I have learned more from working for Rick Sloan than any coach I have been involved with," Julian said. "His work ethic has inspired me and made me realize how hard I have to work to be successful."

The Cougar men's cross country team had a break-through season in 2011, advancing to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2006. The Cougar men's team of Andrew Kimpel, Jono Lafler, Justin Englund, Andrew Gonzales, Todd Wakefield, Drew Jordan and Lee George finished 21st. The Cougar men also achieved a fifth-place finish at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational and a fourth-place finish at the NCAA West Regional meet with Kimpel and Lafler earning USTFCCCA All-Region honors.

Nike's Oregon Project, under the direction of Alberto Salazar, is a group created by athletic shoe company Nike in 2001 to promote American long distance running, using air thinning technology. The runners live and train near Nike's headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.

"This is an exciting opportunity that presents some new challenges for me," Julian said. "We are at a place with the sport of track and field where the direction of the Nike Oregon Project is making a difference."

The year was 1974 and on one warm summer night about 9 p.m. my family and I were playing a card game.? Our house was located on Old Mchenry Rd. between Forest Lake and Hawthorn woods Illinois.? We were into our game for about an hour when a car drove fast up our driveway.? We realized it was a friend of ours. What was strange was she never came over this late.? She ran towards our door we were all looking out of.? We wondered what was going on for her to be here at this hour.? She said there?s ufos everywhere.? We all looked at each other and asked ?what?s a ufo? ?? Seeing I was only ten then and can honestly say I never heard that term before. We walked out side and started looking into the night sky not knowing what we were about to see.?? I pointed up and said look at that orange light.? Then we noticed that there were at least five or six of them positioned in the sky.? Not in any formation but just randomly spread out and not moving.? The color resembled that of a campfire that?s glowing deep orange.? Matter of fact I can say that I?ve never seen that much of color ever since.? We were all looking at the lights for a while when one started coming our direction.? It stopped almost directly overhead.? Seconds later another one moved closer.? One at a time these lights moved nearer to us.? By this time we were all getting scared so we called our friends husband and told him what was happening.? He drove over within minutes and also was looking at the lights.? By this time they were all around the house above and near our 2/3 acres.? 2 or 3 hundred feet up. Maybe less because one of the lights hovered then decended over the swamp which was about 2 or 3 hundred yard away.? It was out of sight for 30 seconds or so then rose to it?s original hovering position.? The Lake County Sheriffs dept. was called and two deputies arrived shortly after.? They didn?t have to ask us what was going on because they saw them right away.? Here we were just staring at these lights with the deputies, admiring their orangeness.? One at a time they would move then stop, move then stop,move then stop.? Like they were looking for something.? One of the lights moved very close to another then hovered next to it momentarily then moved back to it?s original position.? Drivers by were pulling over seeing what we were seeing.? After two hours or so they took off into space (one at a time) leaving an orange streak in their wake.? The objects were about 3 times the size of venus when it is in full view.? The color orange was undescribable.? I guess you couldn?t get it more orange than that.? What they were can only be a guess.? This incident happened 38 years ago and is burned into my memory.? Iran's Ahmadinejad says no place for Israel in new Middle East

DUBAI | Fri Aug 17, 2012 4:31pm IST

DUBAI (Reuters) - Many thousands of Iranians shouted "Death to America, death to Israel" during state-organised protests on Friday and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told them there was no place for the Jewish state in a future Middle East.

Iran, penalised by tough Western sanctions, faces the threat of an Israeli or U.S. military strike on its disputed nuclear facilities. With popular uprisings reshaping the region, the Islamic Republic is also trying to prevent the overthrow of its closest Arab ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"You want a new Middle East? We do too, but in the new Middle East ... there will be no trace of the American presence and the Zionists," Ahmadinejad told worshippers at Tehran University in an event broadcast live on state television.

The Iranian leader, whose own authority is under challenge from hardliners as well as reformers, was restating Tehran's familiar goals as the Middle East undergoes a very different upheaval from the 1979 Islamic revolution that toppled the U.S.-backed Shah and brought Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to power.

"Saving the existence of the Zionist regime (Israel) is a joint commitment by most arrogant Western governments," Ahmadinejad said in a speech to mark the annual Al-Quds (Jerusalem) Day decreed by Khomeini and held on the last Friday of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan.

He called for Muslim unity to foil Western support for Israel, which he described as a "cancerous tumour" for its occupation of Palestinian land.

But there was little unity on display at an Islamic summit in Mecca earlier this week when the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation suspended Syria despite Iran's objections.

Speaking at the emergency summit, Ahmadinejad said Western powers could never be a role model for the Islamic world.

"Freedom and democracy will not come from the barrels of NATO guns and the interference of Western nations," he said.

Shi'ite Iran has watched in dismay as rebels drawn mainly from Syria's Sunni Muslim majority try to oust Assad, whose country has been a vital part of Iran's "axis of resistance" against Israel, Sunni-ruled Arab states and the West.

"I think the enemies have been successful to a certain extent in creating regional conflicts," Ahmadinejad acknowledged, without naming Syria.

Iran accuses the United States and its allies in the Middle East of backing Assad's opponents to try to relieve pressure on Israel by destroying the "axis of resistance" between Tehran, Damascus and the Lebanese Shi'ite Hezbollah movement.

State television said millions of Iranians joined the al-Quds Day marches across the country and showed large crowds chanting slogans and carrying portraits of Khomeini and his successor, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Some bore a coffin decked with pictures of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders. Demonstrators burned American and Israeli flags.

Israel, thought to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed power, sees Iran's nuclear activities as a threat to its existence and has repeatedly threatened military action if diplomacy fails to resolve the issue. Iran denies seeking a bomb and says its nuclear work has only peaceful purposes.

Japan police to hand pro-China group to immigration

All 14 pro-China activists arrested after sailing to an island disputed with Japan will soon be in immigration custody as Tokyo prepares their immediate deportation, police said Friday.

Okinawa Police were making final arrangements to transfer the remaining five to an immigration facility later in the day after nine were sent there overnight, a police spokesman said.

"With the process, they will leave the hands of police and go to immigration," the spokesman told AFP.

The group of activists had sailed from Hong Kong on Sunday. Five of them were arrested on one of the islands known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese on Wednesday, the 67th anniversary of Japan's World War II surrender.

News reports said Japan was likely deport them as early as Friday, with Tokyo looking to avoid a repeat of the diplomatic calamity of 2010 when it held a Chinese trawlerman for two weeks after he rammed coastguard vessels.

Japan was widely criticised as having caved in to Chinese pressure and being forced into releasing the man after Beijing halted high level contacts and stymied trade.

In 2004, when a group of Chinese activists landed on a disputed island, the then prime minister Junichiro Koizumi ordered their deportation after two days.

The renewed dispute over the islands comes as Japan's relations with South Korea have also become increasingly frayed after President Lee Myung-Bak last week visited islets controlled by Seoul but claimed by Tokyo.

HONOLULU (AP) ? U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono has won the Democratic primary in Hawaii for an open U.S. Senate seat, setting up a race in November against former Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle.

Hirono bested former U.S. Rep. Ed Case on Saturday night to set up a rematch of sorts against Lingle. Lingle beat Hirono 10 years ago to become Hawaii's chief executive, then went on to serve eight years.

Lingle won her primary easily. Republicans hope she can swing the solidly blue state their way in the party's quest to pick up four seats and majority power in the U.S. Senate.

Lingle enters the general election as the underdog but having raised more funds thus far than Hirono.

Hirono had nearly 58 percent of the vote with 70 percent of precincts reporting.

Philippine officials say scores of gunmen from a breakaway Muslim rebel group attacked army outposts with gunfire and grenades in two southern provinces, sparking clashes that killed at least 3 people and wounded eight others.

Maguindanao Gov. Esmael Mangudadatu says gunmen from the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement launched simultaneous attacks on army detachments in four towns in his province late Sunday and sporadic clashes were continuing Monday. The gunmen also attacked two army outposts in nearby North Cotabato province.

Mangudadatu says two attackers were killed overnight in Maguindanao, along with a villager on a highway, which was closed as the fighting raged.

The rebel group broke off last year from the main Moro Islamic Liberation Front because it opposed the Moro guerrilla front's protracted peace talks with the government.

Weapons maker Lockheed builds submarine for oil rigs

PALM BEACH, Florida (Reuters) - Lockheed Martin Corp is already the Pentagon's biggest supplier and the largest information technology provider for the U.S. federal government, but now it is turning its sights on a $1 billion niche market in the oil and gas industry.

At a small waterfront facility just outside Palm Beach, Florida, engineers have developed a 10-foot unmanned submarine named Marlin that uses sonar and other technologies developed for the U.S. military to inspect off-shore oil rigs in far less time and at lower cost than current systems.

The bright yellow unmanned undersea vehicle was tested last summer in the Gulf of Mexico at a facility owned by Chevron , generating detailed three-dimensional data that have piqued a great deal of interest in the industry.

A Lockheed crew is back in the area off Louisiana this week, where Marlin is surveying a number of offshore platforms owned by a big oil firm, generating the first commercial revenues for this small arm of Lockheed. Lockheed did not name the oil firm.

The project, first initiated in mid-2009, reflects growing efforts by big weapons makers like Lockheed to find revenues in adjacent markets as they brace for weaker defense spending in the United States and Europe after a decade of strong growth.

Rich Holmberg, vice president of Lockheed's mission and unmanned systems unit in Florida, sees bright prospects for the Marlin vehicle, given the huge and growing number of offshore oil and gas platforms in the Gulf and elsewhere; growing calls for increase regulation after the 2010 BP oil spill; and increased investment in offshore wind energy.

"We're kind of bullish," Holmberg told Reuters in a glass-walled conference room overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway and several of the company's smaller research and support ships.

Holmberg, who previously headed Lockheed's naval helicopter programs, declined to estimate future possible sales or the per unit price, but said Lockheed believed it was the only company with the full set of capabilities offered by the Marlin vehicle at the moment.

The mission and unmanned systems unit has historically been more of a research house, like Lockheed's famous Skunk Works aeronautics development shop, which has earned it the nickname "Squid Works," but it is ramping up for a higher profile.

While other parts of Lockheed are laying off workers, Holmberg's unit has filled 130 positions over the past 18 months, bringing its workforce to 430 people to deal with demand for Marlin and complete work on several U.S. Navy programs, including a remote mine-hunting system for coastal warships.

It also just opened an office in Houston, home of the oil and gas industry, to step up marketing of the Marlin vehicle.

VEHICLE COULD REPLACE DIVERS, TETHERED UNMANNED SYSTEMS

Marillyn Hewson now heads the electronic systems division which oversees Holmberg's unit but is moving up to become Lockheed's president and chief operating officer in January.

She told Reuters in June that Lockheed saw great opportunities for company's unmanned capabilities in the air, at sea and on land, including the autonomous Marlin vehicle.

The new system can be programmed to autonomously survey an underwater object, and detect any changes. It then generates three-dimensional models that oil and gas companies can use to lower their high inspection costs.

Currently, oil and gas companies do inspections using divers and remotely operated, but tethered undersea vehicles that provide less detailed video images.

Marlin could simplify those efforts since it is able to complete inspections in far less time -- mapping a 135-foot platform in 27 minutes -- and can be launched from a smaller ship, reducing fuel costs.

"These systems enable those companies to do more inspections more efficiently so they get better inspections and more inspections for about the same cost as their current inspections," Holmberg said.

Industry data shows there are over 3,800 offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, over 40,000 miles of underwater pipeline, and an estimated 12,000 capped wells -- all of which are subject to various government inspection requirements.

Holmberg said Lockheed is still developing its business model for the new venture, but plans to both sell the unmanned submarines, and to team up with service companies serving North America, the North Sea, Brazil and even the Arctic.

Marlin is currently able to dive to 1,000 feet below the surface, but Lockheed is working on a variant that would be able to service deep water platforms by diving to 12,000 feet, according to Dan McLeod, the creator of the Marlin program.

The company is also working with a subcontractor to integrate a three-dimensional laser that could improve the data gathered by Marlin. It is also exploring systems that would remain under the water but could be turned on when needed.
