Lemonade Day Alaska is Saturday, May 11th! Lemonade Day Alaska is a free, fun experiential entrepreneurship program for youth (K-12) that teaches them how to start and operate their own business through lemonade stands. 2,536 youth participated across Alaska in 2012 and gave a portion of their earnings back to charities totaling $68,000! Register online at:?www.alaska.lemonadeday.org?or contact the Chamber of Commerce at 224-8051 for more information. Look for a Lemonade Stand at the Terry?s Tire Bike Safety Rodeo event!
At the request of a community member, SPRD researched a possible bike grant from?Bikes Belong. In 2013 Bikes Belong will accept Community Partnership Grant Applications only.?These proposals must come from a partnership that is minimally comprised of one government agency or office, one non-profit organization, and one business. Proposals may be for facility or advocacy projects but must be submitted on the Community Partnership Grant Application. SPRD is encouraging community members interested in improving biking pathways, access or increasing the number of bikers in our area to consider uniting formally. SPRD is willing to facilitate such a group once the interested members present themselves. Perhaps a local group of bikers can become strong enough to apply for (minimally, 50% matching) grants up to $10,000 to promote bike pathways and advocating for increased biking and bikers. Additional information on this particular, Bikes Belong grant is available in the?Community Partnership Grant Guidelines. Here, members of the public can review what is and is not funded. For example, there is healthy, local interest in the schools Bike to Work or Bike to School Day. However, since Bikes Belong already supports this cause, these local Bikes Belong grants exclude this program from their Community Partnership grant this year. Please find your parks and recreation Director, Karin Sturdy at 224.4053 or?ksturdy@cityofseward.net. We would love to see our local biking enthusiasts at our annual Terry?s Tire Bike Safety Rodeo on Saturday, May 11 at 10 am at City Hall. It is true this events targets children up to ages 12 or 13. However, what a great place to meet others interested in parking and start some networking about biking partnerships! Thank you to Terry?s Tires and Lube, The Bike Shop, Shoreside Petroleum and Stylin? Stitches, especially for your annual commitment to biking safety!

SPRD is seeking adult volunteers to host the Polar Bear Pink Cheeks Triathlon Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4. All the jobs are critical to the success and safety of the event and particiipants. One such job needed is someone to set up his/her video to record the participants as they cross the finish line. We use this video to confirm place results as a backup system.
Other needed volunteer jobs are: lap counters and timers in the swimming pool on Friday night and Saturday morning to afternoon; traffic control/flaggers; finish line crew; bike queue helpers and monitors; check-in helpers on Friday night and Saturday morning; chip check-in following the race; clean-up crew throughout the day and other great jobs. To volunteer, please call Shari Adelmann, 224.4057 or Maggie Wilkins, 224.5427 or email?sprd@cityofseward.net. Thank you!
The whole community is encouraged to cheer on the hundreds of participants on Saturday morning from 11 am to about 1:30 pm as the runners and bikers hit the bike paths and streets of Seward from the High School to the Lagoon, up and over Dairy Hill, around the Iditarod Mile Zero, then back along Ballaine Boulevard past the Alaska SeaLife Center and back to the school. Each year our participants tell us how nice it is to have the locals cheering for them along the course. Lowell Point residents may be pleased to learn we have cut out that portion of the course and will send our bikers east instead of south. (They will stay off Lowell Point Road completely.)
SPRD is seeking a happy organization of cheerful workers to provide a barbecue as their own fund-raiser, too. Hundreds of participants and their support teams will be milling around, warming up and ready for snacks and a post-race bite. Last year two groups offered two ?menus?. The local Girl Scouts offered treats, baked goods and bottled water. Two teens and their parents hosted the barbecue selling hamburgers and snacks. SPRD commits to purchasing meals for our?special, registered, full-day volunteers and paid staff?as a token to commit to the success of the concession fund-raiser for your group. For details about concessions, contact Karin Sturdy, 224.4053 or?ksturdy@cityofseward.net.
