This might be one of those ?trends? that I?m not entirely sure anyone is actually doing, but I?m frankly kind of intrigued by it anyway.
Yesterday, the Daily Mail wrote about the supposedly increasing popularity of people seeking out counseling for their relationships?their relationships with their friends. According to the piece, the American Psychological Association recognizes the common phrase, ?toxic friends?, and over 10,000 professionals in the U.S. offer counseling sessions for friends. One pair of friends, Christy Stewart and Kim Feighner, detail how they spent $3,000 repairing their damaged but once inseparable friendship. Stewart says her husband didn?t understand why she didn?t just stop being friends with her pal, but the women think it was totally worth it.
As someone with some lifelong friendships as well as some friendships that have fizzled out and ended acrimoniously, I?m pretty fascinated by this idea. I mean, look, I don?t have $3,000 to spend on any relationship period, but the idea that a friendship is as worth saving as a romantic relationship does make sense to me. I have friends that have been every bit as important to me as any boyfriend, and when you have a relationship that close, you?re gonna have rough patches in it, right? Like a marriage, a lifelong friendship isn't something that happens successfully without some work. But would you go to lengths to repair it like this, or just move on to another pal? I'm not sure I would ever do the counseling thing, but I am all for the idea of recognizing the importance and value of relationships besides the one with your significant other.
