Attributed to Trace Adkins:

?A lot of people get attention for the wrong reasons, but the true measure of a hero is serving others. Our servicemen and women stationed around the globe are the real people who fit that bill. They devote their lives to supporting our nation, protecting our freedoms and sacrificing their lives. And deserve all the recognition and thanks we can give them. Each and every USO tour I go out on is important and unique, and this one is no different.?

Researcher tests powerful new tool to advance ecology, conservation

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? A new University of Florida study shows ecologists may have been missing crucial information from animal bones for more than 150 years.

The study featured on the cover of the November issue of Ecology shows animal bone remains provide high-quality geographical data across an extensive time frame. The research may be used to identify regions of habitat for the conservation of threatened species.

Charles Darwin first noted the importance of studying where animal bones lie on the landscape in 1860, but the topic has since become largely lost to scientists trying to protect and conserve native wildlife. By documenting accumulations of elk bones and antlers on the landscape of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, study author Joshua Miller identified areas critical for the species' survival during spring and winter.

"This is fundamental stuff, because for a long time the common knowledge was that bones only lasted a few years on the landscape," said Miller, an assistant scientist at the Florida Museum of Natural History on the UF campus and Fenneman assistant research professor at the University of Cincinnati. "It turns out they last a lot longer and surveys of bones on landscapes offer a new tool for conservation and management -- one that allows us to collect decades of biological data in a single field season."

Walking across Yellowstone Park, Miller documented elk skeletal remains and determined the bones record the same seasonal distributions as aerial surveys of living elk.

Ecologists typically gather information for conservation by monitoring wild animals, a task requiring years of financial support and countless hours of observation by wildlife biologists. A long-term study in ecology consists of at least 10 to 20 years of census data. However, because some bones can survive on some landscapes for hundreds of years, they may include data from time periods beyond the reaches of a traditional ecological study, including historical insight often missing from scientists' knowledge of ecosystems, Miller said.

"A major challenge for wildlife conservation and management has been that biologists can only work in the present -- researchers can only start from when they began collecting data," Miller said. "If someone wants to develop a piece of land, for example, there may only be time for a few years of data collection, and we know as ecologists that such limited observations aren't enough to capture the full complexities of an ecosystem. This research shows we can go into the past, essentially using bones to travel through time and learn about generations of wildlife that were previously lost to science."

A popular hunting species, male elk grow to 700 pounds, shedding their more than 30-pound antlers annually. Miller used standardized bone surveys on 40 five-eighth-mile-long plots in the northern range of Yellowstone Park to identify wintering grounds by antler accumulations and calving grounds by the appearance of newborn skeletons.

"Bones are not randomly scattered across a landscape," Miller said. "Where a bone is found is often as biologically informative as which species it's from. As we investigate the quality of these geographic data, we're discovering that this is a gold mine of information."

Although the study represents a narrow test case, the strong correlation between how bones are distributed across Yellowstone Park and known patterns in how elk use the landscape shows this low-impact survey technique may be useful for understanding other areas, including poorly known or fragile ecosystems, Miller said.

Anna Behrensmeyer, vertebrate paleontology curator at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, uses bone surveys in East Africa for understanding the area's mammal populations and how bones become part of the fossil record. She said the study of taphonomy, the processes affecting organic remains as they become fossilized, is not commonly recognized in the field of ecology.

"In my long-term studies of bones, it has struck me that many ecologists have been missing useful information that is available in bones lying about on modern landscapes," Behrensmeyer said. "Josh is showing the potential of using bones, antlers and other remains to monitor what animals have been doing for the past decades and even hundreds of years."

Behrensmeyer said she hopes taphonomy as a research tool spreads from its traditional place in paleontology and archaeology into the realm of ecology.

"Sometimes we taphonomists feel like a small voice in the universe -- it's hard for the dead to capture the attention of scientists focused on understanding living organisms and ecosystems," Behrensmeyer said. "Once ecologists see this study, they could very well say, 'Why didn't I think of that?' "

Cheap Storage, Garage

Cheap Storage Ideas

For most people, a garage happens to be a really cluttered dumping ground where you may choose to put practically anything and everything which you no longer want in your house. In general, it becomes really difficult to find things as and when you require them. Your garage will also become really messy. Using some really cheap ideas, you will be able to make your garage look quite tidy. You may even be able to make room for a car.

Conduct a Garage Sale

Holding a garage sale happens to be one of the best ways to increase storage space. Get rid of all unwanted items for a weekend sale in your front yard. Get the neighbors involved in order to turn it into a really big event. It will make it really easy for you to organize the rest of the items. Some extra money can be made in the process.

Create Item Zones

You need to group like items into item zones. For instance, one area of the garage may be used solely for sporting goods. Another area may be used for automotive supplies and a third area may be used for gardening tools. You must keep the gardening items near a side door or the garage opening which allows easy access during really warm months.

Install Shelves

You are well advised to purchase inexpensive shelves for the garage walls or you need to make your own. You have to place smaller items in cardboard boxes and keep it on the shelves. Get them labeled so as to identify the contents. The lesser items you have on the floor, the more room you will have for bigger things

Make Use of the Ceiling

Cheap Storage, Garage

Cheap Storage Ideas

You need to use garage?s ceiling in an attempt to create additional floor space. You may use inexpensive hooks in order to hang items like bicycles, ropes, step ladders and cords safely during the winter months

Mobilize the Trash

If trash cans are kept in the garage, use those which have wheels it will be easier for you to create more storage space. If you store cans along the garage wall, you need to place additional shelving above the cans to use that space.

This discussion on cheap storage spaces ends here.

Botswana to ban big game hunting by 2014

GABORONE, Botswana (AP) ? Botswana says it will ban hunting by 2014 because of fears that the nation is losing its wildlife.

The nation's Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism made the announcement Thursday, saying the decision comes after President Ian Khama said hunting must be stopped to save the nation's big game animals. The ministry said that, left unchecked, rampant hunting would be a "genuine threat" to the country's wildlife.

The ministry said hunts by local communities and with special hunting licenses would still be allowed.

Botswana, a nation in southern Africa of 581,730 square kilometers (224,610 square miles), is home to the massive Kalahari Desert and large national parks. It has elephants, lions, giraffes and many other wild animals, making it a popular destination for big game hunters.

Mountain bike group takes aim at Tester's FJRA

Postby mtbgreg1 ? Tue Nov 27, 2012 2:03 pm

In August 2009, the Montana Mountain Bike Alliance hosted its second annual backcountry festival in the tiny town of Lima, population 250. Roughly 150 cyclists from across the region showed up to trek along singletrack in the Lima Peaks by day and party by night. The MMBA brought in a band. Bikers sponsored a spaghetti dinner, even rented local buses for shuttles. All told, the event raised nearly $1,000 for Lima?s assisted living center. Locals thanked the MMBA for the biggest economic boost in Lima in a decade.

Bob Allen, MMBA?s co-president, told the story to members of the Blackfoot Challenge during a recent meeting at the Lubrecht forestry center. It?s a prime example, he said, of the kind of contribution mountain bikers bring to small communities in Montana. It?s also a prime example of why the MMBA wants to see a portion of the Scapegoat wilderness addition boundary contained in Sen. Jon Tester?s Forest Jobs and Recreation Act altered. Mountain bikers have lost access to hundreds of miles of trails across Montana and Idaho in recent years, partly due to a new Forest Service philosophy banning bicycles in certain areas that could theoretically be designated wilderness. Allen is drawing the line in the Scapegoat.

PST: Man U keeper talks about gays, soccer

It?s all about context. For you or I to say soccer needs a prominent player to declare his homosexuality would be so mundane as to border on a truism. Oh, so you think it would be a good thing if players worked in an atmosphere where being open about their sexuality would face no?repercussions? Please, tell me more about your epiphany.?

That we even use the pronoun ?his? in this conversation shows how perverse the topic is. Among female players, the presence of homosexuals is a non-issue. Megan Rapinoe?s confirmation of her sexual identity only made waves among people who aren?t fans of women?s soccer. Hopefully those waves serve to highlight the fact that this really shouldn?t be an issue.

In the men?s game, it?s still a big deal. As many outlets have noted today, there hasn?t been an openly gay active male soccer player since?Justin Fashanu (who played in the English First Division as well as for various teams in North America). Fashanu came out in 1990 and continued playing until 1997 (passing away in 1998).

David Testo is another exception of sorts. Last November, the former Montreal Impact midfielder made public the fact he was gay, but he also said his family, teams, and teammates were aware of his sexuality. It?s important to note: Us not knowing about gay footballers doesn?t mean they?re also unknown to their teammates.

Statistically speaking, it?s impossible that aren?t a lot more David Testos out there. According to a recent survey, approximately one in 28.5 adults in the United States identifies as gay, lesbian or bisexual, a number that certainly understates the case (many people are still reticent to be open with their homosexuality).

Per the numbers, there should be a handful of homosexual men in each major league. Even if you wish to posit homosexuals are less likely to make a living in professional sports, there should still be six-to-eight gay, first team players in each big professional league.

And there likely are. They just aren?t playing in an environment where being open is conducive to a long, professional career.

Which brings us to Manchester United goalkeeper Andres Lindegaard, who decided to take up the issue in a blog for a Danish betting site. His thoughts aren?t any more revolutionary than the mundane truisms we might overhear elsewhere, but the fact they?re coming from an active player at a prominent club make them newsworthy.

According to the Red Devils? co-No. 1, the gay community is in need of a hero, and soccer culture (specifically fans, not players) need to change.

Here are his words, as distributed by the Telegraph:

?Homosexuals are in need of a hero,? Lindegaard said in his blog. ?They are in need of someone who dares to stand up for their sexuality. But homosexuality in football is a taboo subject and the atmosphere on the pitch and in the stands is tough.

?As a footballer, I think a homosexual colleague would be afraid of the reception he could get from the fans, but my impression is that the players would not have a problem accepting a homosexual.

?The problem for me is that a lot of football fans are stuck in a time of intolerance that does not deserve to be compared with modern society?s development in the last decades.

?While the rest of the world has been more liberal, civilised and less prejudiced, the world of football remains stuck in the past when it comes to tolerance.

?To turn a blind eye only indicates that one is not recognising that there is a problem.?

Lindegaard fears that promising footballers could be lost to the game as a result of their sexuality.

?Of course there is a problem if young homosexuals, who love football, have to quit the sport because they feel excluded.? Lindegaard said. ?That is in every way an unpleasant trend that does not belong in a modern and liberal society.?

Earlier today, we talked about the reception the U.S. Women?s National Team got in Portland ? how so many kids see them as heroes for what they do on the field. It would be a naive to think the players? gender has nothing to do with that. While there were certainly a number of children who just see the USWNT as awesome soccer players, the fact that they?re women soccer players make them icons in a sports world that could use more female representation.

Lindegaard brings up the example of young homosexual athletes who, like those kids at Jeld-Wen, could use some icons, if for not other reason than to help stay on course while navigating the trials toward professional career.

Soccer culture should be open to that possibility.

November rain storms heading toward Washington

The National Weather Service says a series of strong Pacific frontal systems are heading toward the Northwest and will bring heavy rains at times this weekend and into next week.

Forecasters say the first storm will arrive Friday night with strong winds. Rain is expected to continue through the weekend with another strong front on Sunday night and another on Monday night.

The rains also are expected to extend through Eastern Washington valleys well into next week. Forecasters say the storms will likely drop heavy snow in the mountains above 3,500 feet.

University of Washington Atmospheric Sciences Professor Cliff Mass writes on his blog that the last two weeks of November are the wettest period of the year, and this year won't disappoint.

TSX slips as miners, energy weakness weighs

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian stocks moved lower on Tuesday, weighed down by a drop in gold mining and energy shares, as bullion and oil dipped and investors brushed off a Greek debt deal to focus on a looming U.S. fiscal crisis.

Bombardier Inc jumped 8.3 percent to C$3.38 after the planemaker signed a $7.8 billion deal to supply business jets to a private Swiss charter operator.

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd slid 6.9 percent to C$11.07 after rising sharply since mid-month on optimism over its upcoming new devices.

Meanwhile, resource stocks that play a major role in the overall direction of the index were broadly lower, with the biggest drag coming from Goldcorp Inc , which slipped 1.5 percent to C$40.18.

"People generally feel that gold is going higher, but the stocks suffer on an ongoing basis because ... it's so easy to buy the commodity," said Paul Harris, a portfolio manager at Avenue Investment Management, which manages $280 million.

Gold eased after U.S. consumer confidence rose to a four-and-a-half-year high in November and a Fed policymaker expressed concern about easing measures. Oil edged lower as global growth concerns offset an agreement over Greek debt.

After 12 hours of talks at their third meeting in as many weeks, Greece's international lenders agreed on a package of measures to reduce its debt by 40 billion euros.

"Maybe some people were expecting more positive news on Greece and so they sold off after it happened," Harris said.

Attention will likely now turn more decidedly to the U.S. Congress, where politicians are haggling over how to solve the country's fiscal crisis while avoiding a "fiscal cliff" of steep tax increases and spending cuts.

By 10:56 a.m. (1556 GMT) the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> was down 33.67 points, or 0.28 percent, at 12,151.49.

Judge orders tobacco firms to say they lied

?

By Frederic J. Frommer, Associated Press

WASHINGTON --?A federal judge on Tuesday ordered tobacco companies to publish corrective statements that say they lied about the dangers of smoking and that disclose smoking's health effects, including the death on average of 1,200 people a day.?

U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler previously had said she wanted the industry to pay for corrective statements in various types of advertisements. But Tuesday's ruling is the first time she's laid out what the statements will say.

Each corrective ad is to be prefaced by a statement that a federal court has concluded that the defendant tobacco companies "deliberately deceived the American public about the health effects of smoking."

Among the required statements are that smoking kills more people than murder, AIDS, suicide, drugs, car crashes and alcohol combined, and that "secondhand smoke kills over 3,000 Americans a year."

The corrective statements are part of a case the government brought in 1999 under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations. Kessler ruled in that case in 2006 that the nation's largest cigarette makers concealed the dangers of smoking for decades, and said she wanted the industry to pay for "corrective statements" in various types of ads, both broadcast and print. The Justice Department proposed corrective statements, which Kessler used as the basis for some of the ones she ordered Tuesday.

Tobacco companies had urged Kessler to reject the government's proposed industry-financed corrective statements; the companies called them "forced public confessions." They also said the statements were designed to "shame and humiliate" them. They had argued for statements that include the health effects and addictive qualities of smoking.

Kessler wrote that all of the corrective statements are based on specific findings of fact made by the court.

"This court made a number of explicit findings that the tobacco companies perpetuated fraud and deceived the public regarding the addictiveness of cigarettes and nicotine," she said.

A spokesman for Altria Group Inc., owner of the nation's biggest tobacco company, Philip Morris USA, said the company was studying the court's decision and did not provide any further comment. A spokesman for Reynolds American Inc., parent company of No. 2 cigarette maker, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., said the company was reviewing the ruling and considering its next steps.

The statements Kessler chose included five categories: adverse health effects of smoking; addictiveness of smoking and nicotine; lack of significant health benefit from smoking cigarettes marked as "low tar," "light," etc.; manipulation of cigarette design and composition to ensure optimum nicotine delivery; and adverse health effects of exposure to secondhand smoke.

Among the statements within those categories:

  • "Smoking kills, on average, 1,200 Americans. Every day."?
  • "Defendant tobacco companies intentionally designed cigarettes to make them more addictive."?
  • "When you smoke, the nicotine actually changes the brain ? that's why quitting is so hard."?
  • "All cigarettes cause cancer, lung disease, heart attacks and premature death ? lights, low tar, ultra lights and naturals. There is no safe cigarette."?
  • "Secondhand smoke causes lung cancer and coronary heart disease in adults who do not smoke."?"Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at an increased risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), acute respiratory infections, ear problems, severe asthma and reduced lung function."?
  • "There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke."?

Justice Department spokesman Charles Miller said the department was pleased with the order.

Matt Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, called it an important ruling.

"The most critical part of the ruling is that it requires the tobacco companies to state clearly that the court found that they deceived the American public and that they are telling the truth now only because the court is ordering them to do so," Myers said in an interview. "This isn't the last word, but this is a vitally important step because this should resolve exactly what the tobacco companies are required to say."

In July, a federal appeals court rejected efforts by the tobacco companies to overrule Kessler's ruling requiring corrective statements. The companies had argued that a 2009 law that gave the Food and Drug Administration authority over the industry eliminated "any reasonable likelihood" that they would commit future RICO violations.

In her ruling Tuesday, Kessler ordered the tobacco companies and Justice Department to meet beginning next month to address how to implement the corrective statements, including whether they will be put in inserts with cigarette packs and on websites, TV and newspaper ads. Those discussions are to conclude by March.

Western Digital My Book Thunderbolt Duo

The Western Digital My Book Thunderbolt Duo ($849.99 list) is one of the largest capacity drives you can buy. Dual 4TB drives together in a RAID 0 array means that you can hold up to 8TB on one logical volume. While this technically means you can store files larger than 4TB (like raw video or a massive database), it also means you can store a mind-boggling large number of smaller files (say every photo a professional photographer has taken since 1997, in native RAW format). It's a prime choice if you need all that space, but there are faster drives out there that take better advantage of the next generation Thunderbolt port. Think of it as a future-proofed bucket for all your files.

Design and Features
The My Book Thunderbolt Duo comes in a silver colored 6.5 by 4 by 6.25 inch (HWD) desktop drive enclosure. It looks very much like the still available Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II 6TB ($499.99 list, 4 stars), aside from the fact that the WD Studio Edition II has a capacity gauge its front panel. Instead, the Thunderbolt Duo has a simpler power/drive use LED. In the back are two 10Gbps dual-channel Thunderbolt ports, the jack for the AC adapter, and a Kensington lock port. Unfortunately, the Thunderbolt Duo lacks a USB 3.0 port or FireWire 800 port, both of which would be helpful if you ever needed to transfer files with a PC or Mac that lacks a Thunderbolt port. Make sure to transfer files from your old drive over the network or using a Mac with both types of ports.

The My Book Thunderbolt Duo comes with two capacious 4TB Hitachi hard drives pre-installed, and configured for RAID 0 (striping). This isn't as odd as it sounds, since Hitachi and Western Digital are now corporate cousins. This gives you 8TB of storage, which is one of the largest capacities available in a desktop drive enclosure. You can use the included WD Drive utilities to reconfigure the Thunderbolt Duo as a RAID 1 array (protected 4TB drive) or as a pair of individual 4TB drives (JBOD). You can pop the top panel open with a touch, exposing the drive cage. After undoing a thumbscrew and lifting out another panel, you can access the My Book Thunderbolt Duo's two drives. This is handy for the sorts of folks who burn out hard drive mechanisms often, like video editors. You can ask Western Digital for replacements during the drives' three-year warranty. The drives come pre-equipped with slide in pegs and easy to use handles, so you can replace them a few minutes without using a screwdriver.

The drive comes with an installer for WD Drive Utilities, which lets you register the drive, set drive security (256-bit encryption), run diagnostics, format the drive, set the RAID level, and set a sleep timer for the drive. The sleep timer is important, since you don't want the drive to run 24/7 and risk burn out unnecessarily. The drive comes formatted for HFS+ (native Mac format), which means you can use it with Time Machine out of the box. The two Thunderbolt ports on the back are interchangeable; you can connect your Mac to one port, then daisy chain other drives or a display to the other port. Thankfully, the 8GB version of the My Book Thunderbolt Duo comes with one Thunderbolt cable, so you don't have to shell out an extra $49 for Apple's cable. Lower capacity versions (4TB and 6TB) do not come with a cable, so you'll have to add one to the cart when you buy the Thunderbolt Duo.

Performance
The Thunderbolt Duo's speed rivals that of a solid-state drive on some operations. The drive took a short six seconds to transfer our 1.2GB test folder, a faster time than the 17 seconds of the SSD-powered LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt (120GB SSD) ($299.99 list, 4.5 stars), equal to the Editors' Choice LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt (1TB SSD) ($999 list, 4.5 stars), and about twice as fast as the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series (6 TB) ($749 list, 4 stars).

The My Book Thunderbolt Duo is also a smidge faster than its faster cousin, the Western Digital My Book VelociRaptor Duo ($899 list, 4 stars) on the drag and drop test (11 seconds). However, the VelociRaptor Duo is a lot faster at the AJA system test, which simulates the sort of drive transfers that are commonplace in the video editing world. The Thunderbolt Duo is capable of good scores: 257MBps read and 263MBps write scores at the AJA system test. The VelociRaptor Duo speeds along with a 374 MBps read speed and 343 MBps write speed, handily beating the 2big drive (320MBps Read, 304MBps Write), but coming in behind the Little Big Disk (620MBps read, 380MBps Write). This means that the Thunderbolt Duo is fast, the Velociraptor Duo is faster, but the Little Big Disk is the fastest. Granted, they all have different capacities and markets, matching their relative speeds.

The My Book Thunderbolt Duo concentrates on capacity. Weighing in at 8GB, It's one of the largest capacity drives we've tested short of a multi-disk NAS array. It's larger and faster than older FireWire 800 drives by a long shot. It's also much larger (but slower) than its speedy sibling the Western Digital My Book VelociRaptor Duo (2TB), and all are significantly slower than the Editor's Choice for external drives, the La Cie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt (1TB). If you absolutely, positively need 8TB for your large database, scientific, or graphics files in a single volume and are looking to keep your drive future-proofed, then the My Book Thunderbolt Duo is a very good choice, but there are faster drives (with much lower capacity) at this price point.

The Western Digital My Book Thunderbolt Duo comes in as a high-speed drive for graphics designer and scientific professionals. While not as capacious as the LaCie 2Big Thunderbolt, it is significantly faster. It's also faster on write operations and has much more capacity than SSD-powered solutions like the LaCie Little Big Disk and Rugged Thunderbolt solutions. The Promise Pegasus R6 ($1,999 list, 3.5 stars) has a larger capacity and greater speed, but my goodness look at the price tag. The current external drive EC, the IoSafe Solo G3 (1TB) ($299 direct, 4.5 stars) holds on to its title thanks to its rugged, fire-proof construction and included data recovery service, but the Thunderbolt Duo is a great choice for Mac professionals and any specialized PC user that needs the speed of Thunderbolt enough to seek out and buy one of the few Thunderbolt-equipped PCs.

Incorporate These Great Self Improvement Tips Into Your Life ...

It can be hard to find how to start your own path towards personal development. There is no foolproof method: every individual has to find a personalized solution. Therefore, you need to be constantly searching for new methods to assist you, such as the ones in the below article. Read this article so that you can find excellent methods that can be applied in your own personal development strategy.

If you have a habit of overreacting, you are causing yourself unneeded stress. It?s best to train yourself to cope with your daily stress, and it begins with analyzing every situation where you tend to feel strained. You?ve probably made mistakes, but you can find ways to fix it, or even live with it. Look at what you?ve got instead of focusing on what you lost.

In order to grow as a person, you must accept change and learn how to thrive with it. We need to choose the change if we expect to really grow.

A good thing to consider when it comes to personal development is, value your important things. When you value the goals you hope to achieve, it becomes easier to make them materialize.

TIP! An important new trait called sexual capitol is currently being researched. This involves using your wit and charm to help you get the things that you need.

Instead of bragging about how many things you?ve earned in your life, try to ask other people about what they?ve earned in their life and what they?re proud of. You will find that you will learn more about those around you better by doing this. Not only that, you can respect them by knowing more about them.

Ask successful people around you about their habits and consider adopting them too. Pick a few basic ones at first, then practice them steadily until you do them without thinking. It takes approximately three weeks to make a new habit stick, so tell yourself that every day is another day closer to positive change.

Failure at some task can seem like a devastating injury to your self confidence. The truth about failure is that it is a learning experience in disguise. You will now know how to deal with the situation and what your weaknesses are. Every thing you fail at, you should be proud of, it is just another part of you!

TIP! Individuals who are dealing with severe problems may benefit from regular therapy. Self help books can help you, but do not expect these methods to replace a doctor who can assess your situation personally.

Taking care of yourself will be helpful in your personal development. Good health makes anyone feel happier. You will feel stronger and have more control over your time and money since you won?t have as many medical expenses. One of your most important personal development goals should be to start living a healthier life.

You can?t tend to others needs until your own needs are met. Be sure to rest, relax, and restore your own mind and body.

Make sure the goals you set for yourself are small and manageable so you can easily achieve them and develop the lifestyle that will make you happy. Take your weaknesses and focus on eliminating them and your self-esteem will rise.

If you?re not living up to the goals that you set for yourself, take a good hard look at what may be wrong. Find out some ideas online and look to others who have similar expectations. You may find that you are setting the bar too high, forgetting a critical step, or not allocating enough of your resources to solving the problem.

TIP! Keep in mind the well-known saying that you can?t please everybody all of the time. Your main concern should be yourself.

Remember to practice humility. In the grand scheme of things, we are relatively insignificant. People with different experiences and different perspectives are filled with knowledge you may not have. Open yourself to new ideas and other ways of thinking! It?s not possible to learn everything first hand, so increase your knowledge by soliciting information from others.

Always carry something you can record your ideas on. Paper is an old fashioned way to record notes, but it never runs out of battery power. Just write down what their idea or thought is and then develop it more when you have the time and are feeling creative.

You must know what you want out of your life in order to develop personally. Use these goals as a way to measure your successes.

You need a good attitude for personal development. Living your life with a poor attitude will only attract more of the same to your life. Instead, stay positive and tell yourself that having a good attitude will help you achieve your goals.

TIP! Are you an alcohol abuser? Do you smoke or do other activities that may be harmful to your health? Your body is sacred, and you have to learn to respect it. Improve your life by eliminating unhealthy habits.

When you want to improve yourself, you need goals. Don?t just think about them, either; write them down. If you are trying to become more confident, write that down. Next, analyze each goal one by one and decide how you can change yourself to meet those goals. Next, place yourself in scenarios where that is possible. By pursuing your goals aggressively and systematically, you are more likely to succeed.

Every morning when you wake up, tell yourself that you are going to make today better than yesterday. Keep aiming higher and higher. Challenge yourself to improve on something that you did yesterday.

You should always have an idea as to what you personal values are before you develop a plan for personal growth. When you focus on things that don?t matter to you, your goals will never truly make sense. Instead of this, you should focus your energy on the things that you want to develop that also go along with your own values. Implementing a plan for self improvement can improve both your work and home life in the future.

Write a pep talk for yourself. Make a list of all the good things about you, and put it on a postcard. Keep it with you at all times, and refer to it when necessary. You can also read it and record it on video, and watch it often. Why not?

TIP! Moving toward your goal and meeting your personal needs demands that you do one specific thing to be successful. It is important that you be an active participant in living your life.

Exercise can benefit almost anyone, even those who are not trying to shed excess weight. There are many physiological benefits associate with exercise. People who exercise regularly are generally happier and more relaxed than their couch potato counterparts.

When you?re looking for employment, having a degree is often essential. It typically does not matter what school that degree came from though. Of course, there are some exceptions, such as the large financial institutions. Just get a college degree so that doors will open to you.

It is important to keep in mind that everyone is different, so look through the advice in this article, and choose the things that you think will work for you. You must apply what you have learned to see success. If the advice you?ve found here sounds right for a friend or family member, feel free to share it so that you and others can improve yourselves together.

Try challenging yourself as much as possible. There are always new growth opportunities with new challenges. Perhaps you will gain some knowledge or a new skill. You never know, you may be the first at something and set yourself up as a role model for future generations. Do what you want to do, rather than what others do.

Smoking 'rots' brain, says study

Smoking "rots" the brain by damaging memory, learning and reasoning, according to researchers at King's College London.

A study of 8,800 people over 50 showed high blood pressure and being overweight also seemed to affect the brain, but to a lesser extent.

Scientists involved said people needed to be aware that lifestyles could damage the mind as well as the body.

Their study was published in the journal Age and Ageing.

Researchers at King's were investigating links between the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke and the state of the brain.

Data about the health and lifestyle of a group of over-50s was collected and brain tests, such as making participants learn new words or name as many animals as they could in a minute, were also performed.

They were all tested again after four and then eight years.

Decline

The results showed that the overall risk of a heart attack or stroke was "significantly associated with cognitive decline" with those at the highest risk showing the greatest decline.

It also said there was a "consistent association" between smoking and lower scores in the tests.

These results underline the importance of looking after your cardiovascular health from mid-life?

End Quote Dr Simon Ridley Alzheimer's Research UK

One of the researchers, Dr Alex Dregan, said: "Cognitive decline becomes more common with ageing and for an increasing number of people interferes with daily functioning and well-being.

"We have identified a number of risk factors which could be associated with accelerated cognitive decline, all of which, could be modifiable."

He added: "We need to make people aware of the need to do some lifestyle changes because of the risk of cognitive decline."

The researchers do not know how such a decline could affect people going about their daily life. They are also unsure whether the early drop in brain function could lead to conditions such as dementia.

Heart and brain

Dr Simon Ridley, from Alzheimer's Research UK, said: "Research has repeatedly linked smoking and high blood pressure to a greater risk of cognitive decline and dementia, and this study adds further weight to that evidence.

"Cognitive decline as we age can develop into dementia, and unravelling the factors that are linked to this decline could be crucial for finding ways to prevent the condition.

"These results underline the importance of looking after your cardiovascular health from mid-life."

The Alzheimer's Society said: "We all know smoking, a high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and a high BMI [Body Mass Index] is bad for our heart. This research adds to the huge amount of evidence that also suggests they can be bad for our head too.

"One in three people over 65 will develop dementia but there are things people can do to reduce their risk.

"Eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, getting your blood pressure and cholesterol checked and not smoking can all make a difference."

GI's treatment focus of hearing in WikiLeaks case

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) ? An Army private charged in the biggest security breach in U.S. history is trying to avoid trial by claiming he's already been punished by confinement conditions that a United Nations torture investigator called cruel, inhuman and degrading.

Pfc. Bradley Manning is expected to testify about his treatment during a pretrial hearing starting Tuesday at Fort Meade. The young intelligence analyst has never spoken publicly about his nearly nine months in the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va., from July 2010 to April 2011. The hearing is scheduled to run through Sunday.

Manning was confined alone in a 6-by-8-foot cell for at least 23 hours a day, according to documents filed by the defense. For several days in January 2011, all his clothes were taken from him each night until he was issued a suicide-prevention smock, military officials have said.

The Defense Department has said Manning's treatment properly conformed to his classification as a maximum-custody detainee who posed a risk of injury to himself or others. He was moved in April 2011 to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he has a medium-security classification.

Publicity about Manning's treatment helped bring worldwide attention to his case. In March, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Juan E. Mendez presented a report to the UN's Human Rights Council in which he criticized the U.S. government for refusing his repeated requests for a private visit with Manning.

Although they never spoke, "I am persuaded that Pfc. Manning was subjected to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment" in violation of the UN Convention Against Torture, Mendez wrote in a Nov. 15 email to The Associated Press.

Mendez said he doesn't know if Manning's treatment amounted to torture, as Manning supporters claim.

Military judges can dismiss all charges if pretrial punishment is particularly egregious, but that rarely happens. The usual remedy is credit at sentencing for time served, said Lisa M. Windsor, a retired Army colonel and former Army judge advocate now in private practice in Washington.

"I think the likelihood of him getting any charges dropped is extremely remote," she said.

If the military judge refuses to dismiss the case, defense attorney David Coombs has requested 10-for-1 credit for 258 days of supposedly punitive confinement. That would knock a little more than seven years off Manning's sentence if he is convicted. He faces the possibility of life imprisonment if convicted of the most serious charge, aiding the enemy, and 162 years on the 21 other counts. His trial is set to begin Feb. 4.

Jeff Paterson, a leader of the Bradley Manning Support Network, said the credit would be meaningless if Manning gets a lengthy sentence.

"If that credit is meaningless, then that signals that you can actually torture any personnel or detainee without any actual consequences," Paterson said.

Manning is accused of sending to the secret-spilling website WikiLeaks hundreds of thousands of classified Iraq and Afghanistan war logs and more than 250,000 diplomatic cables while working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010.

The 24-year-old native of Crescent, Okla., allegedly told a confidant-turned-informant in an online chat in 2010 that he leaked the information because "I want people to see the truth."

Manning has offered to take responsibility for the leak by pleading guilty to reduced charges. The military judge hasn't yet ruled on the offer. It is not part of a plea deal, and it would not preclude prosecutors from pursuing the original charges.

Taghazout Surf Festival: a new way of promoting green tourism in ...

By Fatima Matousse

Morocco World News

Fez, November 25, 2012

Taghazout Festival is set to take place from the 17th to 29th of December in a stunning beach village called Taghazout. This village is situated 18 km north of Agadir, in Souss-Massa-Draa region. An association called Izorane (?roots? in Tamazight) was created in 2007 to contribute to the development of this village by organizing several activities such as surf competitions, concerts, beach cleaning, and heritage celebrations.

Taghazout is known to be one of the destinations of the most skillful surfers in the world. It also receives millions of tourists every year.

The program of the festival will include the following: surf competition with DJ, a music concert on the beach, beach cleaning, and press conference. Through this event, university professors specializing in the environmental field aim is to raise awareness about the effect of pollution on their region.

Beach cleaning of the village will take place on the 28th of December starting from 10 a.m. Villagers, tourists, surfers and association activists will take part in this event.

The surf competition will take place on the 29th of December. That same day, a musical concert will entertain the audience with the participation of the famous singer Amazigh Amouri Mbraek, DJ Face, Rass Derb, Abdellah Khoutia, MC Jamal, and Eava from Morocco. The winners in the competition will be awarded prizes.

Taghazout and the surrounding beaches near Agadir are known for being one of the most frequented destinations for surfing in the world. For instance, Imourane, a beach located near Taghazout, is known for hosting national and international surf competitions.

While the villagers continue to rely on fishing as one of their sources of living, sport tourism has become an important economic activity of many young people in the region who operate surf camps, shops that rent surf materials, furnished apartments, who also interact with tourists coming from all over the world. This festival comes to contribute to the development of the region and it is an opportunity for people to network, have fun, educate each other and learn to surf.
