In the aftermath of the attacks, the defense team had Bales examined by psychiatrists, who concluded that he was not insane at the time of the attack, Browne told the Associated Press. ?His state of mind does not rise to the level of a legal insanity defense.?

Post-traumatic stress disorder doesn?t meet the threshold for an insanity defense, either, however, since under military law only legal insanity can excuse or be a lawful defense for any type of crime.

That said, his state of mind has been a pivotal aspect of the defense team?s case.

So what does the plea agreement ? in which Bales pleads guilty and will be sentenced to life in prison in order to avoid being executed ? say about the willingness of the military justice system to take into account the impact of war on the psyche of US troops who have been fighting America?s wars for more than a decade?

After all, the US military hasn?t executed anyone since 1961, analysts point out.

?In light of the experience of so many people serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, I think there is more openness in acknowledging that people may struggle with PTSD as they come back home,? says a US military lawyer, who asked for anonymity because he is not authorized to speak with the press.

?If in sentencing they feel that PTSD might have prompted the misbehavior or might have clouded the individual?s values in some way, that can be used to reduce sentence in the eyes of the jury or the judge.?

While arguments of PTSD may be used to mitigate a sentence, however, they cannot be used to excuse the crime, the military lawyer points out.

That said, ?He?s been deployed for years, and I think a panel [of jurors] might have sympathy for him,? says Richard Rosen, director of the Center for Military Law and Policy at Texas Tech University School of Law and a former attorney in the Army?s Judge Advocate General Corps. ?They may be more open to the effects of post-traumatic stress syndrome.?

And that is indeed the hope in any plea bargain made by Bales? defense team, which has emphasized the impact of repeated deployments to war.

?He?s broken,? Browne said. ?And we broke him.?

U.S. households still feel the recession

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The average U.S. household has a long way to go to recover the wealth it lost to the Great Recession, a report by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis concluded Thursday.

The typical household has regained less than half its wealth, the analysis found. A separate Federal Reserve report in March calculated that Americans as a whole had regained 91 percent of their losses.

Household wealth plunged $16 trillion from the third quarter of 2007 through the first quarter of 2009. By the final three months of 2012, American households as a group had regained $14.7 billion.

Yet once those figures are adjusted for inflation and averaged across the U.S. population, the picture doesn't look so bright: The average household has recovered only 45 percent of its wealth, the St. Louis Fed concluded.

That suggests that consumer spending could remain modest as many Americans try to rebuild their wealth by saving more and paying off debts.

The number of U.S. households grew 3.8 million to 115 million from the third quarter of 2007 through the final three months of last year, the report said. As a result, the rebound in wealth has been spread across more people and reduced the average wealth for each household.

In addition, though inflation has averaged just 2 percent over the past five years, it's eroded some of the purchasing power of Americans' regained wealth.

The St. Louis Fed's analysis noted that the rebound in wealth hasn't been equally distributed. As a result, many households are even further behind than the average.

Nearly two-thirds of the increase in household wealth since 2009 is due to rising stock prices, the authors note. Stock indexes reached record highs this month. Those gains disproportionately benefit affluent households: About 80 percent of stocks are held by the wealthiest 10 percent of the population.

For middle- and lower-income households, home values represent the biggest chunk of total wealth. And home prices remain about 30 percent below their peak, even after jumping nearly 11 percent in the past year.

The analysis was written by William Emmons, an economist at the St. Louis Fed, and Ray Boshara, who directs its new Center for Household Financial Stability.

"It's like the economy is this airplane and not all the engines are firing," Emmons said.

Still, wealthier households account for a disproportionate share of consumer spending: About 20 percent of Americans account for about 40 percent of spending.

Consequently, the rise in stock prices should provide some lift to spending, Emmons said.

The average household had a net worth of $539,500 at the end of last year, according to a separate paper the St. Louis Fed released Thursday. That was up from $469,900 in the first quarter of 2009. But it was sharply below the peak of $641,000 in the first quarter of 2007.

The note, scrawled with a pen on the interior wall of the cabin, said the bombings were retribution for what the U.S. did to Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq, and called the Boston victims collateral damage in the way Muslims have been in the U.S.-driven wars. When you attack one Muslim, you attack all Muslims, the note added.

Sources told?CNN?and?NBC News?that these were similar to sentiments Tsarnaev expressed in his bedside interrogation in a Boston hospital before attorneys read his rights.

Boy suspended for gun-shaped pastry gets NRA membership

(Reuters) - An 8-year-old Maryland boy who was suspended from school for nibbling a pastry snack into the shape of a gun has been given a junior membership in the National Rifle Association.

After hearing about Josh Welch's suspension from Park Elementary School in Anne Arundel County, a state legislator paid $550 to buy him a Junior Life Membership in the NRA, Welch's lawyer said on Thursday.

"I was embarrassed that my county would do that to him," said Nicholaus Kipke, leader of the Republican minority in the lower house of the Maryland legislature. He presented the gift to the second-grader Wednesday night.

The boy's lawyer, Robin Ficker, said he is appealing the two-day school suspension that started on March 1 when Welch ate away part of his Pop-Tart during class snack time so that it resembled a gun shape.

In the appeal, Ficker included pictures of the U.S. states of Idaho and Florida because "they look more like guns than Josh's Pop-Tart."

The Anne Arundel County Public Schools spokesman, Bob Mosier, declined to comment on the status of the appeal.

Ficker said the NRA membership gift was a great idea for the boy, who "is a good kid, a little rambunctious," because it would teach him proper handling of firearms. He said the boy's family does not own guns and the boy has never handled a gun.

France says will back down over Bayer acne pill

PARIS (Reuters) - France's health regulator said on Thursday it would comply with the European Commission if it ruled that Bayer acne pill Diane 35 and its generic versions were safe to use in some cases.

However, it added it would keep sales of the treatment on hold until then.

France is the only EU country where sales of the treatment were suspended earlier this year after four deaths over the past 25 years were linked to its use.

Diane 35 reduces acne by regulating hormones and blocking ovulation, and is often prescribed as a contraceptive even though it is not approved for this use.

Following a formal safety review, conducted at the request of French authorities, the European Medicines Agency concluded earlier this month that the benefits of Diane 35 outweighed the risks - provided measures were taken to minimize the chance of blood clots forming in veins and arteries.

These recommendations were endorsed on Thursday by a European Union body representing EU member states and will be sent to the European Commission, which will adopt a legally binding decision in the coming weeks.

The French government in January also stopped reimbursing prescription costs of third and fourth-generation birth-control pills and restricted their use after a woman sued Bayer over alleged side effects.

Five Favorite Films with Nick Offerman

Much like his wife Megan Mullally on Will & Grace, Nick Offerman's mustachioed visage became a pop culture phenomenon when his character on another NBC sitcom, Parks and Recreation, simply refused to fade quietly into the background as a small, supporting role. The legend of Ron Swanson has grown exponentially since the show's debut in 2009, and he is among the most popular characters -- if not the most popular -- on a hit comedy chock full of popular characters played by grade-A talent.

The truth is, Mr. Offerman is a seasoned veteran of the stage and screen who emerged from the Chicago theater world back in the late 1990s and began securing parts in film and on television (including a guest spot on Will & Grace) before landing his big break on Parks and Rec. These days, he finds it difficult to dissociate himself from the Ron Swanson mythos, but that doesn't stop him from trying different things, like the play he and Mullally are currently performing in Los Angeles or his latest role in The Kings of Summer, in which he plays a single father whose frustrated teenage son escapes to the forest with two friends to fend for themselves. RT spoke with Nick about the film, what it's like to be pigeonholed as Ron Swanson, and how his love of carpentry helped get him into acting. I'll start with Midnight Run. Just one of the finest Goddamn movies I've ever seen. Charles Grodin and Robert De Niro. If there's a better buddy comedy, show it to me, and I'll shake your hand. It's so funny. It's also where I learned what chorizo is. Being from Illinois, not a lot of truck stops serve chorizo and eggs. It was part of my "goin' out west" legend, like, "One day, I will go to California, and on the way there, I will experience chorizo and eggs."

When you finally experienced it, was it all that you hoped it would be?

And so much more. It's still one of my mainstays. You can't beat the spiciness of the chorizo mixed with the sort of creaminess of the eggs. It's so delicious with a fresh salsa, preferably of the tomatillo variety. Forget about it. I just made my mouth water.

As a kid in the middle of Illinois, it was really a culture vacuum. I mean, we had the Eagles on the radio and John Denver, which are fine in their own right, but you want a little more variety, especially if you're going to end up being an underground hedonist like myself. When Mel Brooks movies came my way, it was just like, "Holy shit. These were made in heaven and sent straight to my VCR." You know, come on, just Mongo. If you're 12, all you care about is Mongo farting and punching out a horse. Literature does not become any more refined than that of the great Mel Brooks.

If I had to pick just one movie, I'd say, "Give me The Big Lebowski," because I can watch that thing 20 times in a row. I'm such a fan, and really, no one's busted me on it yet, but all I really want to do is be John Goodman when I grow up. He's so incredibly intelligent and full of pathos and hilarity, while at the same time, being this crazy linebacker of a man. His work in that and Raising Arizona, which I'll put in a subset under The Big Lebowski, when he eats that fucking bowl of cereal while smoking a cigarette in Raising Arizona, I'm like, "Alright, there is room for me in the pantheon of actors."

Taking a slight turn, I love the John Wayne film The Quiet Man. It's quite something. It's a John Ford movie, it's John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. It's kind of like John Wayne's Brigadoon. He plays this boxer who killed a man in the ring in the States, and so, to escape his past, he moves to his ancestral little home in Ireland. It's this quaint little village, and I believe it's called Innisfree -- I know Innisfree is from a Yeats poem, and it sort of represents the small Irish town of heaven; it's sort of a fantastical place -- but the town in The Quiet Man is Innisfree, which makes sense. So he goes there to escape his past, falls in love, of course, with Maureen O'Hara -- who wouldn't? -- and her brother turns out to be the enormous, pugilistic, evil, Bluto-like landlord. So the movie cannot be resolved, nor can their love, without one final fistfight. It's funny; just the other day, I sent a message to my agent, "Remake idea: The Quiet Man?" I have two fists. I can swagger.

[Akira] Kurosawa's Rashomon. I mean, any Kurosawa blows my mind out my ass. We did a production of Rashomon that was actually a play. We did that at my college. We had this amazing sword teacher named Robin McFarquhar, and that was one of his big triumphs, was this production of Rashomon. It's such a cool play, because you do it four times in a row, and you get everybody's perspective. You know, one time the samurai is brave, one time he's a coward. It's really delicious for the actors.

Mothers now top earners in 4 in 10 US households

WASHINGTON (AP) ? America's working mothers are now the primary breadwinners in a record 40 percent of households with children ? a milestone in the changing face of modern families, up from just 11 percent in 1960.

The findings by the Pew Research Center, released Wednesday, highlight the growing influence of "breadwinner moms" who keep their families afloat financially. While most are headed by single mothers, a growing number are families with married mothers who bring in more income than their husbands.

Demographers say the change is all but irreversible and is likely to bring added attention to child-care policies as well as government safety nets for vulnerable families. Still, the general public is not at all sure that having more working mothers is a good thing.

"This change is just another milestone in the dramatic transformation we have seen in family structure and family dynamics over the past 50 years or so," said Kim Parker, associate director with the Pew Social & Demographic Trends Project. "Women's roles have changed, marriage rates have declined ? the family looks a lot different than it used to. The rise of breadwinner moms highlights the fact that, not only are more mothers balancing work and family these days, but the economic contributions mothers are making to their households have grown immensely."

The trend is being driven mostly by long-term demographic changes, including higher rates of education and labor force participation dating back to the 1960s women's movement. Today, more women than men hold bachelor's degrees, and they make up nearly half ? 47 percent ? of the American workforce.

But recent changes in the economy, too, have played a part. Big job losses in manufacturing and construction, fields that used to provide high pay to a mostly male workforce, have lifted the relative earnings of married women, even among those in mid-level positions such as teachers, nurses or administrators. The jump in working women has been especially prominent among those who are mothers ? from 37 percent in 1968 to 65 percent in 2011 ? reflecting in part increases for those who went looking for jobs to lift sagging family income after the recent recession.

At the same time, marriage rates have fallen to record lows. Forty percent of births now occur out of wedlock, leading to a rise in single-mother households. Many of these mothers are low-income with low education, and more likely to be black or Hispanic.

In all, 13.7 million U.S. households with children under age 18 now include mothers who are the main breadwinners. Of those, 5.1 million, or 37 percent, are married, while 8.6 million, or 63 percent, are single. The income gap between the families is large ? $80,000 in median family income for married couples vs. $23,000 for single mothers.

Both groups of breadwinner moms ? married and unmarried ? have grown sharply.

Among all U.S. households with children, the share of married breadwinner moms has jumped from 4 percent in 1960 to 15 percent in 2011. For single mothers, the share has increased from 7 percent to 25 percent.

Andrew Cherlin, a professor of sociology and public policy at Johns Hopkins University, said that to his surprise public attitudes toward working mothers have changed very little over the years. He predicts the growing numbers will lead to a growing constituency among women in favor of family-friendly work policies such as paid family leave, as well as safety net policies such as food stamps or child care support for single mothers.

"Many of our workplaces and schools still follow a male-breadwinner model, assuming that the wives are at home to take care of child care needs," he said. "Until we realize that the breadwinner-homemaker marriage will never again be the norm, we won't provide working parents with the support they need."

Other findings:

?There is a gender gap on attitudes. About 45 percent of women say children are better off if their mother is at home, and 38 percent say children are just as well off if the mother works. Among men, 57 percent say children are better off if their mother is at home, while 29 percent say they are just as well off if she works.

?The share of married couples in which the wife is more educated than the husband is rising, from 7 percent in 1960 to 23 percent in 2011. Still, the vast majority of couples include spouses with similar educational backgrounds, at 61 percent.

?The number of working wives who make more than their husbands has been increasing more rapidly in recent years. Among recently married couples, including those without children, the share of "breadwinner wives" is roughly 30 percent, compared with 24 percent of all married couples.

The Pew study is based on an analysis of census data as of 2011, the latest available, as well as interviews with 1,003 adults by cellphone or landline from April 25 to 28. The Pew poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Djokovic beats Pella to reach 3rd round at French

PARIS (AP) ? Top-ranked Novak Djokovic easily beat Argentina's Guido Pella 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 at the French Open on Thursday to set up a third-round match against rising star Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.

Djokovic has won every Grand Slam title except the French Open and has made this year's tournament his priority. The Serb lost last year's rain-interrupted final at Roland Garros to Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

The match on center court was delayed and interrupted by afternoon rain.

"It's like deja vu from two days ago, you know, coming in and out and warming up five times, but it is the way it is," Djokovic said. "I'm just glad that I finished the match today."

It had little effect on Djokovic, though, as he swept aside the 83rd-ranked Pella in 1 hour, 26 minutes. He had 30 winners, broke Pella's serve six times and did not face a single break point on his serve, clinching victory on his third match point when Pella double-faulted.

The 26th-seeded Dimitrov earlier beat Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-1.

Earlier this month, Dimitrov stunned Djokovic in the second round of the Madrid Open, beating him 7-6 (6), 6-7 (8), 6-3 for the biggest win of his career. He also took a set off Rafael Nadal in quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters last month.

"I think he got more confident as he was getting big wins in last few months, and so he's a tough player now to beat now," Djokovic said. "Even though maybe his style of the game could be better on the hard court or faster surfaces, he's showing that he can play equally well on clay. He pushed Nadal to a tough three sets in Monaco. He beat me in Madrid. "

But Djokovic is confident he can handle Dimitrov in a five-set match.

"It's going to be very physical," he said. "All the hard work that I put into in preparations for this tournament hopefully will play into my advantage and will pay off on the court."

Sue, whose mum Norma (76) has been living with Alzheimer?s and vascular dementia for the past six years, said:

'As a family we have a deep understanding of the condition and a strong conviction that we should do what we can to help those who are affected by dementia.

'My mother has recently moved into a nursing home after being looked after by my dad and her condition has affected us all.'

Emma?s Grandmother also suffered with Alzheimer?s during the final years of her life.

Sue has previously supported the Alzheimer's Society by taking part in the 2011 Alzheimer's Society Memory Walk with her two sisters and brother; the whole family are keen supporters of the charity.

The Ben Nevis Midnight Challenge, which is taking place on the night of the 22 June, requires Sue, Nick, Jack and Emma to scale the 1,343ft mountain before dawn. Britain?s highest mountain is situated in the heart of the Nevis Range in the Western Highlands and Sue, Nick, Jack and Emma will experience the moonlight ascent before seeing the stunning vistas at sunrise.

Train derails in Maryland, explosion reported

WHITE MARSH, Md. (AP) -- A cargo train derailed Tuesday in a Baltimore suburb and an explosion could be heard for miles, collapsing nearby buildings and setting them on fire, officials and witnesses said.

The train derailed at about 2 p.m. in White Marsh, about 10 miles northeast of Baltimore and a fire department spokeswoman said she did not know if there were any injuries. Hazmat teams were on the scene, are responding, Baltimore County Police and Fire said in a series of tweets.

Dale Walston said he lives about a half-mile away from the blast site and that the smell of chemicals is very strong.

"It shook my house pretty violently and knocked things off the shelves," he said in an email to The Associated Press.

Photos and video on TV stations showed a large plume of smoke rising from the area. At least three rail cars could be seen off the tracks.

Overhead news shots show several blackened buildings and fires burning.

A worker at a nearby Dunkin Donuts, Tawan Rai, reached by The Associated Press by phone, said he saw a fire and flames by the railroad tracks at first, then felt a thundering blast that sent smoke pouring into the sky.

"The whole building shook and there was just dust everywhere," said Rai, adding no windows broke but he was surprised by the intensity of the blast. "I went outside and people were rushing there, the police officers, fire trucks."

He also said he saw some ambulances arrive but didn't see anyone injured.

He also said police had apparently stopped traffic on nearby Pulaski Highway not far from the tracks and he no longer had any customers at his donut shop.

John Kane, treasurer of Atlantic Tire on nearby Pulaski Highway, said the explosion blew out two large showcase windows and light fixtures in his shop.

Eager to increase his name recognition and unhampered by spending limits because he is not participating in New York City?s voluntary public matching funds program, Mr. Catsimatidis commissioned this highly biographical 60-second ad, which will be shown on cable and broadcast television, from the Victory Group, which is based in Florida. The firm has worked with former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani.

Report: Chinese Hackers Have Stolen Sensitive US Weapon Design Files

According to a confidential report that's been prepared for the Pentagon, Chinese hackers have stolen blueprints for some of the country's most sensitive advanced weapons systems.

Citing the report and sources within the defense industry, the Washington Post explains that hackers have stolen designs for "more than two dozen major weapons systems". The files were stolen after the hackers breached programs critical to US missile defenses and combat aircraft and ships.

Making the list of system designs stolen during the hack include: the advanced Patriot missile system (PAC-3); a system for shooting down ballistic missiles known as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD); and the Navy?s Aegis ballistic-missile defense system. Elsewhere, classified details regarding the F/A-18 fighter jet, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the V-22 Osprey, the Black Hawk helicopter and the Navy?s new Littoral Combat Ship were also nabbed.

The debacle is part of an ongoing spate of hacking attacks by China on the US. The emergence of the confidential report perhaps hints at why the Obama administration finally pointed the finger at China over cyberespionage earlier this month?but what's to be done about it all, sadly, remains to be decided. 9bn tourist business 'put at risk' by cuts to advertising - This is Cornwall

Funding cuts to tourism support are beginning to "hurt" the industry and risk killing a "golden goose" which generates ?9?billion across the South West, experts claim.

The latest round of cuts in Cornwall are set to slash the tourist budget by almost 20% and remove nearly half the council's dedicated workforce of 20 staff, it has emerged.

In Devon, where even bigger cuts are expected, a leading figure in the industry has called for a "serious" debate before any further reductions are made to avoid jeopardising a sector which supports tens of thousands of jobs.

The Duchy's council-owned tourist body VisitCornwall will see ?200,000 wiped from its ?950,000 annual grant, prompting it to ditch a ?35,000 deal with a German PR company seen as key to attracting legions of fans of the TV adaptations of the romantic novels of Rosamunde Pilcher.

Funding for tourist information centres (TIC) in the Duchy ? which two years ago saw Penzance, St Ives and Falmouth share ?250,000 ? has been halved and now stands at just ?75,000 split between 21 centres.

Malcolm Bell, head of VisitCornwall, who is to lose his personal assistant in the restructure, admits that following a 30% reduction three years ago, the cuts are now starting to "hurt" and projects would now be "limited".

"It is regrettable and nobody is happy," he added. "The reductions mean we have lost capacity to operate as we did before.

"We are still operating in the digital UK market but where it will start to hurt is in tourism representation and influencing ? we will do our best but it will be a lot less than we have done in the past."

Despite operating at the limit, Mr Bell said he would "bet his shirt" on there being more cuts on the way, adding that he would not be "sitting and waiting" but instead attempting to secure private sector funding by developing a new business model.

An in-depth analysis of the benefits of tourism produced by VisitCornwall and published in December, the Value of Tourism, revealed how dependent the region is on the industry.

It shows that a quarter of all employment in the Duchy now relies on tourism, some 60,921 jobs, thanks to the ?1.85 billion spent by tourists.

Excluding the value of visits from family, friends and second homes, the value of tourism to Devon in 2011 was ?2.15bn, compared to ?1.44bn in Dorset and ?1.11bn in Somerset.

The TICs in Cornwall are now planning to form a federation in the hope they can use the remaining cash to at least make sure they hold on to licences for the DMS computerised booking system on which they rely.

Tina Evans, chairman of the Padstow Area Tourism Business Forum, which runs the town's TIC with ?10,000 from the town council and support from Cornwall Council, criticised VisitCornwall for concentrating its efforts on the internet and first-time visitors.

She fears the approach fails the thousands of small businesses which form the "backbone" of the industry and hopes the newly elected Independent/Lib Dem coalition at County Hall will look more kindly on them than the previous administration.

"They should be marketing the whole of Cornwall not just the chosen few who can afford the costly subscription," she added.

"They are piling all the money into social media but people don't get bookings through Facebook and you cannot quantify the results.

"These cuts will cause us pain and we will struggle to find the money ? other TICs will go ? if they don't run this DMS system they will be totally ineffectual and businesses will be lost in the ether."

The funding picture in Devon is much more complicated than Cornwall with six tourism partnerships supporting the industry.

However, a similar picture exists with the county council axing the ?50,000 a year it paid to VisitDevon in the first round of spending cuts two years ago and South West Tourism body has been scrapped.

Caroline Custerson, chief executive of the English Riviera Tourism Company, based in Torbay, where the council is facing ?10 million budget cuts, said Cornwall had seen visitors drop by 6% in a decade and Devon 3%, a time when cities were outperforming seaside destinations.

"We need more money to grow, not less, and we have got to be careful we are not putting ourselves at unnecessary risk when we have got such a good product," she added.

"There needs to be a serious debate over the consequences of cutting tourism budgets.

"The issue councils face is that tourism spending is discretionary and they are focussing on statutory services but with so many people employed the industry is absolutely vital and the backbone of our economy.

"If we allow the visitor experience to be affected detrimentally people will not come year after year."

Weekley wins Colonial, 1st PGA Tour win in 5 years

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Boo Weekley was at the 13th hole during the final round of the Colonial before he finally glanced at a leaderboard ? and saw his name on the top.

It was at that par 3 surrounded by an often rowdy crowd that he also heard the loudest "Boo!" in quite some time.

Weekley hit his birdie putt from about 22 feet, then swiped his putter in the air as if guiding the ball into the cup. He thrust the club above his head when the ball dropped to get him to 14 under, where he finished Sunday for his first PGA Tour victory in five years.

"That's when I realized, 'Wow, here I go.' I need to do something, either hold on to it or try to make a couple of more birdies," Weekley said. "I knew I was hitting the ball too well just to hold on."

With five consecutive pars after that, Weekly finished at 14-under 266 for a one-stroke victory over Matt Kuchar, the second- and third-round leader who had a closing 68.

Defending champion Zach Johnson, who also won at Hogan's Alley in 2010, shot 66 to finish third at 12 under for his first top-10 finish this season ? and fifth straight at Colonial.

Both of Weekley's previous wins had been at Harbour Town, in 2007 and 2008. Like the Heritage winner, the Colonial champion gets a plaid jacket, though the 2008 Ryder Cup team member wasn't able to compare any differences between them.

"I couldn't tell you, it's been so long," said Weekley, who moved up to No. 55 in the world ranking, making him eligible for the U.S. Open.

Weekley's check of just more than $1.1 million matched what he earned his previous 14 tournaments this season while making 12 cuts and finishing in the top 10 three times. He never trailed after consecutive birdies at Nos. 8-10, those coming about the same time Scott Stallings made double bogey at No. 15 to drop out of the lead.

Kuchar, at No. 13 the highest-ranked player in the field, was 12 under after a 55-foot birdie putt at the 436-yard 12th hole. Kuchar punched his right arm into the air to punctuate the shot that got him within a stroke of Weekley for the lead.

Johnson was at No. 17, where a 19-footer for his second consecutive birdie also got him to 12 under.

Almost as quickly, their one-stroke deficit was back to two after Weekley's birdie at No. 13.

"I played well, that's all you can do and whoever wins, tip of the cap," Johnson said.

Stallings' closing 66 put him in a tie for fourth at 11 under, with John Rollins (68) and Matt Every (69).

The best round of the day was a 62 by Web.com Tour player Franklin Corpening, a Fort Worth native who grew up at Colonial and played at TCU. He finished at 8 under and tied for 14th, earning an automatic invitation to play again next year.

Kuchar made an 11-foot birdie putt off the back fringe at No. 2 before a bogey on the next hole when he took two shots from a greenside bunker. Then came a steady stream of pars until rolling in that long putt at No. 12. He didn't have another birdie until a closing 20-footer for second place alone, his sixth career runner-up finish.

"It's a bummer for me. This is a tournament, and this is a golf course, that I love," said Kuchar, a five-time PGA Tour winner. "It's difficult at the moment coming just one shot short but you can't control what other guys do."

Weekley won the same week he went to see a doctor about the problem he has had recently maintaining focus in his left eye, sometimes causing bad twitches and making it problematic reading greens.

"I had a few out there. It was coming and going in that wind," Weekley said. "I don't know what's going to happen. We're going to get home and work on it."

Stallings had a 6-under 29 on the front nine, one off the course record, and was 13 under with a one-stroke lead when he got the 428-yard 15th hole. But he took three shots from inside a radius of about 5 yards after his approach shot from a left fairway bunker stopped behind the hole.

His chip shot then hit the edge of a greenside bunker, rolling into the sand, and he failed to get out of there on his next shot before finally blasting to 6 feet. Weekley had just made an 18-foot birdie at No. 9 to get to 12 under.

"It feels good to actually have butterflies again, knowing that I'm in this, an opportunity to maybe win," Weekley said. "I might have shot 80 today. But I didn't. It was my time to win."

Notre Dame's Star Quarterback Gets Kicked Out ... - Business Insider

Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson is no longer enrolled at the school because of an academic suspension, USA Today reports.

In a statement today, Golson says that he has been suspended for the fall semester due to "poor academic judgement." He says he will miss the 2013 season, but plans to regain his eligibility in the 2014.

From the statement:

"I take full responsibility for my poor choices and will do all that is asked of me to regain the trust of my family, friends, teammates, coaches and the entire Notre Dame community."

The language here is vague. All we know is that he has been kicked out of school for at least the fall semester, and that some sort of academic violation is the reason.

Golson would have been a redshirt sophomore in the fall. He was vital in Notre Dame's run to the National Championship game last year.

Big-time quarterback recruit Gunner Kiel would have been a nice option, but he surprisingly transferred to Cincinnati this spring.

If Golson can make amends for whatever academic wrong he committed, he will still have a few years of eligibility left. But this really hurts the Irish for 2013. Notre Dame's Vegas National Championship odds went for 30-to-1 before the suspension to as high as 50-to-1.

"I have been informed by the University of Notre Dame that due to my poor academic judgment that I have been suspended from the University for the 2013 Fall Term. I take full responsibility for my poor choices and will do all that is asked of me to regain the trust of my family, friends, teammates, coaches and the entire Notre Dame community."

"My parents and the community I grew up in have instilled values in me that have and will continue to allow me to be successful in the future. There have been many lessons learned as I worked to become the starting quarterback at Notre Dame and each was a result of Coach (Brian) Kelly's belief in me as an athlete and a person.

"At this point, I understand how my integrity could be in question but I want to reassure my supporters that through this experience I will return a better student athlete as well as a better individual.

"Lastly, I want to thank the University of Notre Dame for the opportunity already granted and also the opportunity going forth to regain my eligibility in the winter of 2014."
