What is Acne?

Acne, clinically termed as acne vulgaris, is a skin condition that originates due to clogging up of oil and dead skin cells on pores (small opening on the surface of skin). A common man defines the condition as blackhead, whiteheads, blemishes, zits, or pimples.

Mild Acne

This is a condition where you see just a few red spots or pimples on the surface of skin.

Severe Acne

The condition is determined as occurrence of about hundreds of pimples to cover up the face, chest, neck, and back. It can be solid, bigger, red painful lumps (cysts).

The Main Target

Acne is very common among teenagers due to the changes in hormone that make the skin oilier). It usually gets better after the teen years. For women who were saved from developing this condition may suffer during adulthood, often right before their menstrual periods.

What causes Acne?

The major trigger factor is clogging up of skin pores due to oil and dead skin cells. When germs get into the pores, it can result in various conditions such as pus (a viscous, yellowish-white fluid formed in infected tissue), redness, and swelling.

Age Factor

As discussed above, acne usually starts during the teen years. This is mainly due to the hormonal changes that occur in the body.

Dietary Causes

Eating a lot of chocolate or greasy foods may result in acne break out.

Topical Causes

Using a lot of oil-based skin products or cosmetics can make the condition worse.

Hereditary Causes

Acne can run in families. Hence, if one of your parents had severe acne, you are more likely to have it.

Symptoms

The major symptoms of acne include whiteheads, pimples, and blackheads. These may occur on the neck, face, back, shoulders, or chest. Larger pimples are referred to as cystic lesions. These are generally painful when infected. These may even cause serious scarring of the skin.
