For those who aren't familiar with AuthenTec, it's a mobile security company that supplies fingerprint sensor technology and other embeddable security features to some of the biggest businesses in tech, including for Apple's arch rival Samsung.
"Apple's devices are becoming more open to the Internet, effectively increasing the need for security features," said Anil Doradla, an analyst with William Blair.? That's where AuthenTec comes in.
With this acquisition, Apple now gets access to AuthenTec's patents and a range of security technology that includes fingerprint sensors, encryption tools and more. Here's what Apple might do with all of that:
Mobile Payments
Apple's top execs have been hesitant about diving into mobile payments, at least in part because of security concerns. AuthenTec's fingerprint sensors could help with that by providing an added layer of security.
"It's my opinion that Apple views using fingerprint sensors to secure mobile payments as the primary motivation [for this acquisition]," said Richard Shannon, an analyst with Craig-Hallum.
Shannon predicts that Apple will put a sensor underneath the glass on the iPhone's display. Chances are this won't happen on the next version of the iPhone due out in the next couple months, but it could be added to a later model.
Password Management
AuthenTec's fingerprint sensors aren't just useful for mobile payments. Shannon also speculates that Apple could use this to manage passwords for other apps and websites, something that HP already uses AuthenTec for with its PCs.
Right now, iPhone users must remember an endless amount of passwords for many of the websites and apps they access from their phone, but one day, Apple could potentially implement software that would let users tap their finger to an app or website to unlock it instead.
"It's elegant and convenient," Shannon said. "If there's any company in the phone space that loves elegant and convenient, it's Apple."
Enterprise Potential
Apple has had more luck in recent years with enterprise adoption, thanks in part to the popularity of some of its recent products like the iPad. Doradla suggests that AuthenTec's technology could help boost enterprise adoption even more, by providing greater security for business use. This might not be the primary incentive for the acquisition, but according to Doradla, "it falls into the larger theme of Apple going into enterprise." Something tells us IT teams would definitely appreciate this.
Hardware Encryption
AuthenTec currently provides file encryption technology to companies like Samsung that offers better security for the user's data when he or she accesses the Internet or a VPN with the device.
Shannon says that follow in Samsung's footsteps and incorporate AuthenTec's encryption technology directly into the hardware in order to boost data security for products like the iPhone and iPad.
Blocking Competitors Like Samsung
Apple's other big motivation for this acquisition, according to both analysts we spoke with, may have been to take a shot at its competition, and Samsung in particular.
"Apple might have thought that AuthenTec was uniquely positioned in this space and they wanted to make sure it didn't fall into a competitor's hands," Doradla said. Indeed, it's telling that Apple made the acquisition less than two weeks after Samsung entered into a partnership with AuthenTec.

Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/28/2012 -- The Slovakia Real Estate report examines the Commercial Office, Retail and Industrial segments throughout the country in the context of a market stymied by regional weakness.
With a focus on the principal cities of Bratislave, Kosice, and Trencin, the report covers the rental market performance in terms of rates and yields over the past 18 months and examines how best to maximise returns in the commercial real estate market, while minimising investment risk and exploring the impact of regional dynamics on a market ,which looks set to comparatively outperform its peers. Investor sentiment, the business environment and infrastructure are also explored. Rents for commercial real estate in Slovakia generally rose in H111. Businesses pushed Slovakia's commercial property sector into a recovery in 2010 and this continued in 2011, as vacancy rates fell and supply stood still. Nevertheless, full-year 2011 data reveals that all is not yet rosy with only the industrial segment seeing a positive yearon- year (y-o-y) performance. Key factors for 2012 that will dictate the performance of the sector are the economic situation both regionally and domestically, political stability and the fate of the construction sector.
View Full Report Details and Table of Contents
Key Points
- We continue to expect Slovakia's economy to expand by 1.5% in real terms in 2012, with growth largely driven by exports and investment. We expect household consumption to recover marginally, though only towards the end of the year when the effects of fiscal austerity measures wane and the labour market improves.
- Risks of fiscal slippage remain high, particularly given the election of a Smer-SD majority government. While we believe that the Robert Fico-led administration will broadly respect its fiscal commitments to the eurozone, we expect Slovakia to struggle to hit its targets on its current trajectory. We therefore forecast a fiscal deficit of 4.6% of GDP in 2012, before this narrows to 3.3% in 2013.
- We have revised down our real GDP growth projections for 2012 and 2013, which we now forecast at 1.5% and 2.3% respectively. Our revision is predicated on our view for the eurozone to contract in real GDP terms by 0.5%, weighing on Slovak exports.
- Downside Risk To Growth Outlook: Slovakia's heavy dependence on the external sector for its economic growth presents a key downside risk to our forecasts. A significant slowdown in external demand, in particular from Germany, would hit Slovakia's export-led economic recovery.

Entrepreneurs, freelancers and home-based businesses are quickly becoming a growing breed, thanks to recent job market and economic upheavals. Happily for aspiring moguls, its easier than ever to start your own firm, kick off a part-time gig or launch a second career with help from a growing array of high-tech tools.
Small business marketing is an essential component for success as well, however ? and, thankfully, another area where apps, online services and new technology trends can assist. Looking to start your own business or side job? Consider the following solutions for cost-effectively advertising any professional endeavor:
Affiliate Marketing Programs ? Referral programs can be a powerful way to reach new audiences, and transform fans into brand evangelists. By providing noteworthy incentives and savings, and compensating those who pass the word along with goods, gifts and cash rewards, you create a win-win scenario for all involved. Services like Extole and ReferralCandy offer custom off-the-shelf solutions, so you can promote offerings via social networks, apps, email and other tools. And, of course, recruit thousands of salespeople to spread the word on a strictly commission basis.
SEO Keyword Advertising ? Every time customers punch terms into Googles online search box, theyre entering keywords whose search results you can customize classified ads around. That way, when someone looks for car repair shops Atlanta or Denver freelance writers, your business name will quickly pop up. While popular search terms will be more expensive (advertisers bid for placement in a silent auction), you can quickly tailor daily and monthly campaign budgets, geographic location and age targeting to taste. For better results, use more detailed phrases (Omaha web designer), or ? if youre feeling sneaky ? pick terms featuring competitors names or related products: When users search for them, your ads will pop up.
QR Codes ? Quick Response (QR) codes are barcodes which smartphones and tablets can scan to access multimedia or online information. Attach them to your website, business cards and sale items, and users can download menus on-demand, access exclusive savings, or even see video demonstrations of products in action. Provided you offer meaningful rewards (eg 30% off coupons or two-for-one deals) and attach a call to action to each program (scan now to enter our $5000 Europan vacation getaway!), these solutions offer a handy way of boosting trials and/or user engagement.
Location-Based and Mobile Marketing ? Want to reach potential customers? Consider taking the fight to their pocket. From Geotoko to Placecast and Xtify, location-based and mobile small business marketing services can help you send discounts and giveaways right to their cellular phone via text message, email or pop-up notification. Services such as Foursquare and GoWalla can also be used to link ads to specific locations. Let customers know about specials, sales and discounts when theyre just moments away from a potential stop-off, and it could prove a lucrative decision.
Custom Publishing ? Why spend on pricey mailers or brochures? Whether marketing a dog walking service or promoting your video production skills, consider sending virtual advertisements instead. Many email newsletter marketing services ? ConstantContact, MadMimi, Campaigner, Benchmark, iContact, etc. ? make it easy to send custom-tailored promos, or create original advertisements using user-friendly drag-and-drop templates. Likewise, blogging solutions such as WordPress, Blogger and Typepad let you create attractive websites, magazines and online outlets to promote your company and subject matter expertise. (Especially when coupled with affordable plug-and-play visual templates.) Lack technical or graphic design skills, but still want to promote via a professional looking website? Try online tool Onepager instead, which lets you mix and match premade website designs to create a snappy-looking homepage for your small business.

Melissa: How do you foster an attitude of ?with us? not ?against us? between your children?
Michelle: From the time they are very young, I appeal to their conscience. I really try and put them in their sibling?s shoes when they are selfish, do something not nice or try to get someone in trouble. They learn to treat each other the way they want to be treated.
Melissa: How did you learn to speak softly to your children, even when you?re angry??
Michelle: (Laughs) I haven?t mastered this one yet. Just the other day, several of my boys made a mess in the living room. It was just normal kid stuff, but I got angry and overreacted to the mess.
But I feel that by God?s grace, he is giving me some success over yelling. There are times I have to whisper to myself, ?I?m not going to lose it. I am going to stay calm.??
Melissa: Do your kids see you struggle??
Michelle: When my boys made the mess in the living room, I didn?t have the right response. All I could see was a big mess on the carpet, and someone needed to clean it up! I was barking this at my boys as they stood there. My 7-year-old didn?t obey me quickly so I sent him to my room to talk to him. He was near tears as he struggled to talk to me. But what he was trying to tell me was that I was getting angry.
Melissa: How do you take care of yourself??
Michelle: What I really need to re-fuel is alone time with the Lord ? though it?s usually not alone as I?m often pregnant or nursing a baby! But I get my second wind late at night, after the kids are in bed. I have some time with my husband and then I read my Bible, devotion or listen to a message.
I love my time in the evenings ? no children who need me, no phone calls, no one knocking on the door. I try to get to bed around midnight so I can get up most mornings to exercise before 6 on an elliptical machine. I also text with a friend early in the morning to encourage and pray for each other. It?s a great time for me.

PASADENA, Calif. When one observes a colorful jellyfish pulsating through the ocean, Greek mythology probably doesn't immediately come to mind. But the animal once was known as the medusa, after the snake-haired mythological creature its tentacles resemble. The mythological Medusa's gaze turned people into stone, and now, thanks to recent advances in bio-inspired engineering, a team led by researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and Harvard University have flipped that fable on its head: turning a solid elementsiliconand muscle cells into a freely swimming "jellyfish."
Their method for building the tissue-engineered jellyfish, dubbed Medusoid, is outlined in a Nature Biotechnology paper that appears as an advance online publication on July 22.
"A big goal of our study was to advance tissue engineering," says Janna Nawroth, a doctoral student in biology at Caltech and lead author of the study. "In many ways, it is still a very qualitative art, with people trying to copy a tissue or organ just based on what they think is important or what they see as the major componentswithout necessarily understanding if those components are relevant to the desired function or without analyzing first how different materials could be used." Because a particular functionswimming, saydoesn't necessarily emerge just from copying every single element of a swimming organism into a design, "our idea," she says, "was that we would make jellyfish functionsswimming and creating feeding currentsas our target and then build a structure based on that information."
Jellyfish are believed to be the oldest multi-organ animals in the world, possibly existing on Earth for the past 500 million years. Because they use a muscle to pump their way through the water, their functionon a very basic levelis similar to that of a human heart, which makes the animal a good biological system to analyze for use in tissue engineering.
"It occurred to me in 2007 that we might have failed to understand the fundamental laws of muscular pumps," says Kevin Kit Parker, Tarr Family Professor of Bioengineering and Applied Physics at Harvard and a coauthor of the study. "I started looking at marine organisms that pump to survive. Then I saw a jellyfish at the New England Aquarium, and I immediately noted both similarities and differences between how the jellyfish pumps and the human heart. The similarities help reveal what you need to do to design a bio-inspired pump."
Parker contacted John Dabiri, professor of aeronautics and bioengineering at Caltechand Nawroth's advisorand a partnership was born. Together, the two groups worked for years to understand the key factors that contribute to jellyfish propulsion, including the arrangement of their muscles, how their bodies contract and recoil, and how fluid-dynamic effects help or hinder their movements. Once these functions were well understood, the researchers began to design the artificial jellyfish.
Nawroth and colleagues looked at several materials from which to fashion the body of their beast, eventually settling on an elastic material that is relatively similar to the "jelly" found in a real jellyfish. The team at Harvardwith the help of Nawroth, who spent time on both campuses during the length of the projectfashioned the silicone polymer that makes up the body of the Medusoid into a thin membrane that resembles a small jellyfish, with eight arm-like appendages. Next, they printed a pattern made of protein onto the membrane that resembled the muscle architecture in the real animal. The protein pattern serves as a road map for growth and organization of dissociated rat tissueindividual heart muscle cells that retain the ability to contractinto a coherent swimming muscle.
When the researchers set their creation free in an electrically conducting container of fluid and oscillated the voltage from zero volts to five, they shocked the Medusoid into swimming with synchronized contractions that mimic those of real jellyfish. In fact, the muscle cells started to contract a bit on their own even before the electrical current was applied.
"I was surprised that with relatively few componentsa silicone base and cells that we arrangedwe were able to reproduce some pretty complex swimming and feeding behaviors that you see in biological jellyfish," says Dabiri, with fluid-dynamics measurements that match up to those of the real animal. "I'm pleasantly surprised at how close we are getting to matching the natural biological performance, but also that we're seeing ways in which we can probably improve on that natural performance. The process of evolution missed a lot of good solutions."
This advance in bio-inspired engineering, the team says, demonstrates that it is inadequate to simply mimic nature: the focus must be on function. Their design strategy, they say, will be broadly applicable to the reverse engineering of muscular organs in humans. In addition, Dabiri and colleagues say, their new process of harvesting heart-muscle cells from one organism and reorganizing them in an artificial system will be useful in building an engineered system using biological materials.
"As engineers, we are very comfortable with building things out of steel, copper, concrete," says Parker. "I think of cells as another kind of building substrate, but we need rigorous quantitative design specs to move tissue engineering from arts and crafts to a reproducible type of engineering. The jellyfish provides a design algorithm for reverse engineering an organ's function and developing quantitative design and performance specifications. We can complete the full exercise of the engineer's design process: design, build, and test."
The team's next goal is to design a completely self-contained system that is able to sense and actuate on its own using internal signals, as human hearts do. Nawroth and Dabiri would also like for the Medusoid to be able to go out and gather food on its own. Then, researchers could think about systems that could live in the human body for years at a time without having to worry about batteries because the system would be able to fend for itself. For example, these systems could be the basis for a pacemaker made with biological elements.
"We're reimagining how much we can do in terms of synthetic biology," says Dabiri. "A lot of work these days is done to engineer molecules, but there is much less effort to engineer organisms. I think this is a good glimpse into the future of re-engineering entire organisms for the purposes of advancing biomedical technology. We may also be able to engineer applications where these biological systems give us the opportunity to do things more efficiently, with less energy usage."
