The Weekend Baseball Top 10: Stingy San Francisco Giants

By Shane Ryan on
Abelimages/Getty Images

Here are the most compelling matchups, stories, and personalities in Major League Baseball for the coming weekend.

10. Jose Bautista's Incredible June (TOR-LAA)

Bautista now has 14 home runs in June, which ties the American League record from the past 20 years (thanks, ESPN Stats & Information!). The all-time AL record is held by a fellow named Rudy York, who hit 18 with the Detroit Tigers in August 1937. He was probably juicing. But Bautista is theoretically in range. Four home runs over a weekend series? Why not? Except, wait ... June has only 30 days! Injustice! Why, June, why?! That means Sunday's game won't count. But if he hits his 18th home run on July 1, I'm petitioning Bud Selig to add an asterisk to York's record, Ford Frick style.

9. First look at Yankees pitcher Adam Warren (NYY-CWS)

Adam Warren has spent five years in the Yankees minor league organization, and has progressively gotten worse each season. This year, he's 5-5 with a 3.86 ERA and a 4.23 FIP at Triple-A Scranton, striking out fewer batters than ever before and allowing more home runs. And this is the guy who was supposed to hold the fort after Sabathia and Pettitte went down with injuries this week? That sound you hear is me gulping, over and over. (Additional fun fact: Robinson Cano is 10-26 with four home runs in the last seven games.)

8. Orioles-Indians

There's a heavyset guy on Highway 15-501, which runs between Durham and Chapel Hill, who panhandles on the median with a sign that reads, "to ugly to prostitute, to stoopid to steal." I like it, because both points are demonstrated. There's a bit of humor and spirit in the midst of a fairly hopeless situation, which is essentially how I feel about Baltimore-Cleveland.

7. Hot Bat of the Week: Alcides Escobar, Royals (KCR-MIN)

The Kansas City shortstop has gone 12-20 in the last six games, with a bunch of singles, a few doubles, and a home run. Is this a reason to actually watch Royals-Twins, the worst series of the weekend? No. But now you know about Escobar.

6. Pirates-Cardinals

I'm turning no. 6 over to "Terrence," the Grantland robot who is currently training to take our jobs, but who has not yet learned to write in lowercase letters: "THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES MATCH UP AGAINST THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS IN A BATTLE OF TWO TEAMS WHO ARE LESS THAN TWO GAMES BEHIND THE REDS IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE CENTRAL."

Ha ha, thanks Terrence! You're hilarious!

5. Hot Angels, Hot Rangers (TEX-OAK, LAA-TOR)

Sounds like a sweet reality show. I'm not sure what it would be about, but we can figure that out later. Any TV person worth his salt will tell you the title is the most important thing. The deal here is that the Rangers have won three straight, and the Angels four straight. Texas has a 4? game lead in the AL West, but L.A. has crept into the wild-card spot ahead of the fading Orioles. Hey, did you know that Yu Darvish has the most effective slider in baseball? He pitches Sunday against Oakland's Travis Blackley. Or that Jered Weaver has the most effective fastball in baseball? Or that Dan Haren throws the best split-finger fastball? Lucky for Toronto, those last two don't pitch this weekend.

4. Mets-Dodgers

Let's be honest: R.A. Dickey found himself in a bit of a panic last Sunday night against the Yankees. That was his big moment, but he wasn't quite up to the task. Put it this way: I'll be very interested to see if he can get his mojo back tonight against Aaron Harang. The Dodgers, meanwhile, are in a good deal of trouble. They lost to the Mets last night, and dropped three straight to the Giants before that without scoring a single run. The former darlings of the National League now trail San Francisco by a game, and are within striking distance for wild-card hopefuls like the Mets. And who do they get, now that the slide has begun? Dickey and Johan Santana, two of the best pitchers in the league.

3. Verlander-Price (Friday, DET-TBR)

Last week, I was all excited to watch Sale-Greinke on Friday night. My girlfriend was headed out of town, so I dropped her off at the airport at 6 p.m., fought through rush hour traffic (there was a crash, and nothing makes me feel wore as a human than the fact that I get angry at the people who crash for making me sit in traffic interminably, even though they may be, in fact, dead), and got home in time to crack a cold one and settle in for a pitcher's duel. Then the phone calls started coming in. Storms along the East Coast were delaying flights out of Raleigh, and my girlfriend's trip to New York was in doubt. In my heart, I knew what would happen, and sure enough, around 8 p.m., I got the call to pick her up. Not only that, but I had to bring her back at 4 a.m. Saturday.

Needless to say, I was irrationally annoyed with my girlfriend, and she was irrationally annoyed at the weather, so nothing was pleasant. We got home just in time to see Milwaukee get the winning run in the 10th after 18 scoreless innings. Amazing pitchers' duel, and I missed it. Point is, we have another awesome showdown tonight between Price and Verlander (best curve in baseball), and I will miss it again because Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom has finally migrated to this part of the country and I will be there unless someone kills me. Friday baseball just isn't working out.

2. Nats-Braves

Anytime Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez are both pitching over the weekend, as they are on Saturday and Sunday, the Nationals series will make the top five. That's just a given. They remain two of the top five pitchers in baseball by WAR and FIP, and two of the top three by strikeout rate. Add in the drama of the NL East race, where the Braves trail by 3? games and you've got what the kids call a "real humdinger." Atlanta is on the short end of the pitching matchup in all three games, and by all rights they should lose this series. But if they can steal two wins at home, it might plant the first seeds of doubt that lead to a divisional title. Trivia: Who has two thumbs and will miss these games due to the motherf---ing MLB blackout? EVERY PERSON WITH TWO THUMBS IN THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA.

1. The Stingy, Stingy Giants (SFG-CIN)

Let me just put it bluntly: I'm thrilled that the team I cheer for plays in the American League, because the Giants are making the World Series. It's happening, and we should all get used to it. An incredible starting staff, a terrific bullpen, and an increasingly competent offense have them in the lead in the NL West. What's more, they haven't allowed a run in four games, and all four were against teams in first place at the time! The shutout record in the last 30 years (thanks again, ESPN Stats!) belongs to the Orioles, who had five straight in 1995. They can tie that record tonight with Matt Cain (who forces teammates to call him Dr. Perfect since throwing his perfect game), and maybe break it with Barry Zito and Ryan Vogelsong over the weekend. Looks like this guy just found a reason to not go outside.

Google Nexus 7 or Amazon Kindle Fire?

Kindle Fire and Nexus 7.

And that's the question of the summer. Should you get the Amazon Kindle Fire, or the Google Nexus 7. Finally we've got a real choice between low-cost 7-inch tablets. Both are geared toward content consumption -- reading books and magazines, watching movies, listening to music.

Amazon certainly made quite the market for itself when it launched the Kindle Fire late last year. At only $199 and promoted heavily on Amazon's website, it was sure to sell a bunch. And a bunch it did sell.

So which one should you get? Let's discuss, after the break.

Mind reading from brain recordings? 'Neural fingerprints' of memory associations decoded

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? Researchers have long been interested in discovering the ways that human brains represent thoughts through a complex interplay of electrical signals. Recent improvements in brain recording and statistical methods have given researchers unprecedented insight into the physical processes under-lying thoughts. For example, researchers have begun to show that it is possible to use brain recordings to reconstruct aspects of an image or movie clip someone is viewing, a sound someone is hearing or even the text someone is reading.

A new study by University of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson University scientists brings this work one step closer to actual mind reading by using brain recordings to infer the way people organize associations between words in their memories.

The research was conducted by professor Michael J. Kahana of the Department of Psychology in Penn's School of Arts and Sciences and graduate student Jere-my R. Manning, then a member of the Neuroscience Graduate Group in Penn's Perelman School of Medicine. They collaborated with other members of Kahana's laboratory, as well as with research faculty at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Their study was published in The Journal of Neuroscience.

The brain recordings necessary for the study were made possible by the fact that the participants were epilepsy patients who volunteered for the study while awaiting brain surgery. These participants had tiny electrodes implanted in their brains, which allowed researchers to precisely observe electrical signals that would not have been possible to measure outside the skull. While recording these electrical signals, the researchers asked the participants to study lists of 15 randomly chosen words and, a minute later, to repeat the words back in which-ever order they came to mind.

The researchers examined the brain recordings as the participants studied each word to home in on signals in the participant' brains that reflected the meanings of the words. About a second before the participants recalled each word, these same "meaning signals" that were identified during the study phase were spontaneously reactivated in the participants' brains.

Because the participants were not seeing, hearing or speaking any words at the times these patterns were reactivated, the researchers could be sure they were observing the neural signatures of the participants' self-generated, internal thoughts.

Critically, differences across participants in the way these meaning signals were reactivated predicted the order in which the participants would recall the words. In particular, the degree to which the meaning signals were reactivated before recalling each word reflected each participant's tendency to group similar words (like "duck" and "goose") together in their recall sequence. Since the participants were instructed to say the words in the order they came to mind, the specific se-quence of recalls a participant makes provides insights into how the words were organized in that participant's memory.

In an earlier study, Manning and Kahana used a similar technique to predict participants' tendencies to organize learned information according to the time in which it was learned. Their new study adds to this research by elucidating the neural signature of organizing learned information by meaning.

"Each person's brain patterns form a sort of 'neural fingerprint' that can be used to read out the ways they organize their memories through associations between words," Manning said.

The techniques the researchers developed in this study could also be adapted to analyze many different ways of mentally organizing studied information.

"In addition to looking at memories organized by time, as in our previous study, or by meaning, as in our current study, one could use our technique to identify neural signatures of how individuals organize learned information according to appearance, size, texture, sound, taste, location or any other measurable property," Manning said.

Such studies would paint a more complete picture of a fundamental aspect of human behavior.

"Spontaneous verbal recall is a form of memory that is both pervasive in our lives and unique to the human species," Kahana said. "Yet, this aspect of human memory is the least well understood in terms of brain mechanisms. Our data show a direct correspondence between patterns of brain activity and the meanings of individual words and show how this neural representation of meaning predicts the way in which one item cues another during spontaneous recall.

"Given the critical role of language in human thought and communication, identifying a neural representation that reflects the meanings of words as they are spontaneously recalled brings us one step closer to the elusive goal of mapping thoughts in the human brain."

Animal smarts: What do dolphins and dogs know?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It's not just man's closer primate relatives that exhibit brain power. Dolphins, dogs and elephants are teaching us a few lessons, too.

Dolphin brains involve completely different wiring from primates, especially in the neocortex, which is central to higher functions such as reasoning and conscious thought.

Dolphins are so distantly related to humans that it's been 95 million years since we had even a remotely common ancestor. Yet when it comes to intelligence, social behavior and communications, some researchers say dolphins come as close to humans as our ape and monkey cousins.

Maybe closer.

"They understand concepts like zero, abstract concepts. They do everything that chimpanzees do and bonobos can do," said Lori Marino, a neuroscientist at Emory University who specializes in dolphin research. "The fact is that they are so different from us and so much like us at the same time."

In recent years, animal researchers have found that thought processes in critters aren't a matter of how closely related they are to humans. You don't have to be a primate to be smart.

Dolphin brains look nothing like human brains, Marino said. Yet, she says, "the more you learn about them, the more you realize that they do have the capacity and characteristics that we think of when we think of a person."

These mammals recognize themselves in the mirror and have a sense of social identity. They not only know who they are, but they also have a sense of who, where and what their groups are. They interact and comprehend the health and feelings of other dolphins so fast it as if they are online with each other, Marino said.

Animal intelligence "is not a linear thing," said Duke University researcher Brian Hare, who studies bonobos, which are one of man's closest relatives, and dogs, which are not.

"Think of it like a toolbox," he said. "Some species have an amazing hammer. Some species have an amazing screwdriver."

For dogs, a primary tool is their obsessive observation of humans and ability to understand human communication, Hare said. For example, dogs follow human pointing so well that they understand it whether it's done with a hand or a foot; chimps don't, said Hare, whose upcoming book is called "The Genius of Dogs."

Then there are elephants.

They empathize, they help each other, they work together. In a classic cooperation game, in which animals only get food if two animals pull opposite ends of a rope at the same time, elephants learned to do that much quicker than chimps, said researcher Josh Plotnik, head of elephant research at the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation in Thailand.

They do even better than monkeys at empathy and rescue, said Plotnik. In the wild, he has seen elephants stop and work together to rescue another elephant that fell in a pit.

"There is something in the environment, in the evolution of this species that is unique," he says.

Obesity Can Lead to Heart Disease, Stroke&8226Weight Loss And ...

Obesity is defined as having too much body fat. The body consists of water, fat, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. When there is too much fat, you are at higher risks for health problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

When you are obese, you magnify your risk for heart disease. When there is excess body fat it raises your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It raises your blood pressure and can lead to diabetes. In some cases for people with diabetes, they have doubled their risks for a major heart attack or stroke.

Obesity is caused by having more calories consumed, than are burned with physical activity, whether from daily activity or exercise. When there is a great deal of calories consumed, with too much saturated fat and cholesterol, the levels of cholesterol in the blood rises. This increases the risks for heart disease.

Determine If You Are Obese:

Body fat is measured by waist circumference and by body mass index. The high-risk waistline is more than 35 inches for women and more than 40 inches for men.

The body mass index assesses the body weight in comparison to the height. It is a method to measure the body?s composition in correlation to the body fat. It is calculated by taking the body weight in pounds divided by the height in inches squared then multiplying it by 703.

The National Center for Health Statistics has the following levels for mass body index calculations:

18.5 is considered underweight.

18.5 ? 24.9 is considered healthy.

25.0 to 29.9 is considered overweight. This is generally 10 pounds over the ideal body weight.

30.0 or greater is considered obese.

Extreme obesity is defined as a body mass index of 40 or greater.

Here are some suggestions to reduce or prevent obesity:

1. Add physical activity to your daily routine. Adults need to have at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity three or four times a week. Children need to have at least 60 minutes the same amount of times a week.

2. Reduce time watching television or sedentary activities including time on the computer or playing video games.

3. Create opportunities for physical activity at work as well as home.

4. Promote healthier choices of food serving five to nine servings of fruit and vegetables every day.

5. Reduce the portions of the food consumed. Avoid ?supersized? meals and value meals with larger portions.

Taking steps to avoid or reduce the chances of obesity has many benefits for everyone. The fact of living a healthy longer life is incentive to work on the weight issues leading to heart disease and other health related issues. Americans have the highest rate in the world for heart disease based on the amounts of people that are overweight.

Chinese banks may cut mortgage rates

Sri Lankan News.Net
Monday 11th June, 2012 (IANS)

Chinese banks may lower their mortgage rates after the central bank decided to cut its benchmark interest rates last week, a media report said Monday.

The Guangdong Huaxing Bank said Sunday that it will offer a 30 percent discount for first home buyers applying for mortgages. It is the first bank to lower mortgage rates after the central bank's June 7 announcement.

The state-owned bank, however, stressed that it will continue to enforce the policy of increasing benchmark interest rate by 1.1 times for second home buyers, China Daily reported.

For most banks, including the state-owned ones, the maximum discount for first home buyers remain at 15 percent by Sunday.

An industry source said that if one bank lowers its mortgage rates, other banks usually follow suit.

2013 Chevy Volt stretches out the electric miles, works harder for the money

Chevy Volt

Every car gets a mid-life refresh to keep the customers flocking in, but a hybrid poses its own unique challenges: it has to give yet another reason to skip buying an (often cheaper) gas-only ride. Chevrolet's solution for the 2013 Volt is to keep drivers on electric power for longer. A slightly larger battery capacity with more real-world room lets the new Volt run for up to 38MPGe (up from 37) solely on its electric motor, 98MPGe (up from 94) if you have to draw on the fuel tank and 380 miles of range before you're looking for a plug or a gas station. If gas looks to be the only option for a long drive, an EV Hold Mode borrowed from the Volt's Opel Ampera cousin will keep the electricity in reserve until you're closer to a charging location. Hypermilers have some entertainment through a new center stack that merges GPS, satellite radio and USB media playback into a seven-inch touchscreen unit. They likewise get a lane departure warning system as well as uniform roof and trunk colors -- that signature, two-tone Volt look is going away. We're still waiting to see if prices have changed, but you can get the current scoop after the jump.

Herbs That Can Help Your Cats | Pawesome :: Power to the Pets

Willy and Zena enjoying cat grass

My attempts this year to turn my black thumb even slightly green have been thwarted at every turn by my two cats, Willy and Zena. Earlier this spring, I tried to start some seeds inside. Things were going okay until I took the tops off my starter containers, to let them get a bit higher ? and then every day, came home to find that a few more seedlings were now missing their tiny new leaves, courtesy of my feline household companions.

One of my cats, Zena, seems particularly fond of the seedlings of pepper plants, having now devoured bits from sweet pepper, habanero, chili, and jalapeno plants. I even bought a ready-to-plant habanero, thinking the thicker stems would turn her off, but no such luck. It?s funny because Willy is the cat who will actually steal our spicy foods when we?re not looking. I guess the greens themselves are mild tasting. My spicy lettuce greens do, however, have a kick ? or did, before both cats decided they were just a particularly flavourful kind of cat grass. (I do regularly bring them cat grass, which they love ? you can see them enjoying it in the photo above ? so I may only have myself to blame for this problem.) They also made quick work of my cilantro and dill plants, though they were not interested in the lemon thyme and only mildly intrigued by the chocolate mint. If nothing else, this whole experience has proven that mint is a very hardy plant; mine has recovered from its mild cat attack nicely. The other herbs were not so lucky.

After checking to make sure none of these plants were actually bad for my cats, I wondered if they had some healthful properties for them that I was unaware of. It can?t just be that they would really like to eat some cilantro-covered Mexican food, right? As it turns out, there are many herbs that are not just safe for cats to eat, but also beneficial.

Catnip plants

This article is a good starting point for those who want to give their kitties some herbal loving. For example, a catnip (above) bath can soothe your itchy cat?s skin, and peppermint might help keep fleas at bay. Cats also find licorice root tasty, and it can settle their stomachs.

As for my cats? favourites, cilantro and dill are both reported to be safe for cats, though it seems that their only known benefit might be their delicious flavour. Apparently sweet pepper plants are also safe, though some ornamental peppers can be dangerous. If you?d rather your cats didn?t eat your plants, try sprinkling them with cayenne pepper or crushed red peppers to?dissuade?them. (I suspect this may not work with my vindaloo-loving kitty Willy.)

Remember, when you bring a plant into your home or plant it outside, review if it?s safe for your pets ? and it never hurts to double check with your vet!

Artspace and The Actors Fund Housing Development Corporation Announce Partnership

Two leaders in affordable housing join forces to provide live/work space for Los Angeles artists

MINNEAPOLIS, June 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Artspace and The Actors Fund Housing Development Corporation (AFHDC) today announced the formation of a partnership, bringing together two of the nation's leaders in the area of artist housing to create the Broadway Arts Center in downtown Los Angeles. This partnership underscores the viability of the project, which will provide affordable housing for artists and signals a commitment on the part of these organizations to move ahead with development.

While this announcement marks the formalization of their partnership, Artspace and AFHDC have been working for the last year and a half with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, as well as the California Institute of the Arts and Bringing Back Broadway, on a feasibility scope of work that has included public input meetings, focus groups, comprehensive arts market surveys and an affordable housing/commercial market study. A summary and initial results of this work are available at http://creativespacela.org/. This work, funded through a grant from the NEA Mayor's Institute on City Design 25th Anniversary Initiative, found tremendous unmet need for affordable space for artists, arts organizations and creative businesses in Downtown Los Angeles. Artspace and AFHDC, with their newly formed partnership, will continue working toward the creation of the Broadway Arts Center in Los Angeles.

Artspace, with more than 30 years of experience developing affordable space for artists and arts-related organizations, and The Actors Fund, a nationwide human services organization that helps all professionals in performing arts and entertainment, bring their considerable expertise in the area of housing, along with their shared missions of serving individual artists to bear in their first joint project.

"Artspace's experience and leadership in successfully developing affordable spaces for the arts community make them the perfect partner for this project," said AFHDC President and CEO Scott Weiner. "Together we will be able to make the vision of affordable spaces for artists to live, create and collaborate a reality in downtown Los Angeles."

"I've been an admirer of the work of The Actors Fund for years and I'm thrilled to finally join with them formally," said Artspace President Kelley Lindquist. "The Broadway Arts Center is our second project in California and the AFHDC is the perfect partner for us in Los Angeles, where they have such a strong presence."

Next steps in the process of creating the Broadway Arts Center include site selection and evaluation. A timeline for completion of the project has not yet been finalized, but according to Artspace, which has developed 30 properties around the country, projects of this nature can take anywhere from three to six years.

Baker Tilly Found Liable in Aqua Finance Lawsuit; Ordered to Pay ...

This slipped by us last week, but after noting last Thursday morning that a lawsuit against Baker Tilly?for $327 million was nearing its end, we found this story from late on Thursday reporting that BT had lost the suit to Aqua Finance.

Aqua Finance accused its former accounting and advising firm of negligence and breach of contract. Aqua Finance attorneys asked jurors to award up to $327 million.?Aqua Finance's attorneys argued that Baker Tilly and its partner who managed Aqua Finance's account, Kevin Prather, withheld that the Wausau company's loan losses were improperly calculated and did not meet industry standards, according to court records.?Baker Tilly's attorneys say the company's losses were because of the economy, not accounting errors.

Baker Tilly's attorneys didn't comment for the article.?

?

On the surface, this could be a little problematic for Baker Tilly who had a reported $238 million in revenues for 2011. If you don't have a 10-key handy, the award of $50 million is over 20% of those revenues. That's...that's not good. Back to that in minute. As for the partner in question, according to his?LinkedIn profile,?Mr. Prather is a eight year veteran of the firm and his name was all over this complaint:?

Prather announced in February 2008 that Aqua Finance's loan loss reserves were not conducted in accord with industry standards since Jan. 1, 2005, and the company's loan loss reserves must be increased by $20 million, according to a complaint filed in court. Prather later said that he discovered the problem one year earlier, but had not reported it to Aqua Finance.?Baker Tilly withdrew from its agreement to complete Aqua Finance's 2007 audit until after the company resolved its loan reserve issue.?Aqua Finance downsized from 380 employees in January 2008 to 97 employees in February 2011 as it struggled to obtain credit and lost potential customers, according to court records.?Jurors on Thursday found that Baker Tilly was negligent in waiting one year to disclose information about problems with Aqua Finance's reserves. Jurors also determined that Baker Tilly was negligent in its handling of Aqua Finance's 2007 audit and its decision to not complete it.

For good measure, the jury also found that BT was negligent for not completing the 2007 audit. The jury did not find Mr. Prather negligent.?

?

But back to the firm - It stands to reason that BT will appeal - that'll be expensive - and it certainly has professional liability insurance, but it's not immediately konw how much of that will cover the award or if this constitutes a long-term financial dilemma for the firm. We sent an after-hours email to Baker Tilly CEO Tim Christen asking many of these question but it was not immediately returned. We'll let you know if we hear back.?
